Excerpt from Cotton, or Weevils Insects, like all other living creatures, need food. But their eating is often of considerable importance to man because they injure or destroy crops upon which he depends for food, clothing, or other necessities. Consider the boll weevil. To keep alive it must have green plant food. There are only two or three plants that it will eat, and cotton is one of them - ih fact, the one. It much prefers. When the weevil cannot get cotton, however, it will feed on other plants, such as okra. And hollyhocks, which are close relatives-of cotton. The fact that this weevil feeds almost entirely on cotton is very important. When an insect eats only one kind of plant, it must have a great deal more of that plant each day for its food than it would need if it ate several kinds. Insects increase very fast and eat so much of their food plant that there is sometimes not enough left for man to use. This is true of the boll weevil. Each year there are millions of these weevils and they get hungry every day If there is no way to destroy them in the cotton fields, they will eat so much of the crop that there will not be enough left to pav the plant ers for growing it. Excerpt from Boll-Weevil Cotton in Texas Some of the solitary bracts representing reduced involucres, are not of the usual expanded form, but narrowly tubular or trumpet shaped. (pl. III, Fig. To form these tubular bracts the margins must have been united or fused together at a very early stage of development, while the abortion of the other bracts and of the flower bud must have taken place at a still earlier stage in the for mation of the involucre. The tubular bracts may be described as ascidia, a name that has been applied to similar malformations of leaves in several other families of plants. The marginal teeth of the solitary bracts are reduced in number, especially those of the tubular bracts, or ascidia. Having lost their floral buds at the early stage of development the reduced involucres can serve only as leaves, and they persist for the remainder of the season, as already stated. The stalks or pedicels of the reduced involucres are very short and slender, more like petioles of small leaves than like pedi cels of normal buds or bolls. Excerpt from Hibernation of the Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil Until this time the hibernation of the bell weevil has been less understood than any other phase of its life history. This was due to the great difficulty in obtaining the necessary data and the fact that the phenomena of hibernation are not necessarily identical in different seasons. In fact, it will be seen from the following pages that there have been very important dissimilarities between the years when special observations have been under way. The necessary repeated work in large cages in different localities has now been carried on and extensive field observations have been made in various representative parts of the infested area as to the natural situations in which the hibernating weevils occur. As a result, the present bulletin will make the life history of the bell weevil during the winter season at least as well known as any other portion of its biology. In the work leading to this bulletin practical considerations have always received primary attention. However, it has repeatedly been shown that careful detailed investigations of injurious insects may result in important suggestions for control that are not foreseen at the beginning of the work. Therefore the tepic of the hibernation of the boll weevil has been investigated from every possible standpoint. Its importance, as a critical period in the life history of a most injuri ous pest, has abundantly warranted this work.
