Book Description
LE PROCEDE AEROSOL-GEL EST UN NOUVEAU PROCEDE, BASE SUR LA PULVERISATION ULTRASONORE D'UNE SOLUTION DE PRECURSEURS SOL-GEL. NOUS AVONS DEVELOPPE CE PROCEDE ET TRAVAILLE SUR L'ELABORATION DE COUCHES DE SILICE A BASSE TEMPERATURE, DANS LE CADRE D'UN PROJET EUROPEEN BRITE-EURAM. LES PARAMETRES CHIMIQUES PERMETTANT DE DEPOSER DES COUCHES HOMOGENES ONT ETE IDENTIFIES. NOUS AVONS POUR CELA UTILISE ET DEVELOPPE PLUSIEURS VARIANTES DE LA SPECTROSCOPIE INFRA-ROUGE A TRANSFORMEE DE FOURIER : TRANSMISSION EN INCIDENCE NORMALE ET OBLIQUE, ATR, DECONVOLUTION DES SPECTRES. LES ANALYSES FTIR ONT PERMIS DE METTRE A JOUR LES INTERACTIONS ENTRE LE PROCEDE ET LES PARAMETRES CHIMIQUES. SUITE A CES OBSERVATIONS, DEUX APPAREILLAGES AEROSOL-GEL ONT ETE CONSTRUITS : - UN REACTEUR DE RECHERCHE PERFORMANT, QUI PERMET D'OBTENIR DE FACON REPRODUCTIBLE UNE HOMOGENEITE DE 3 % EN EPAISSEUR SUR DES PETITS SUBSTRATS, - UN PROTOTYPE DE REACTEUR DE DEPOT CONTINU SUR DES SUBSTRATS DE PLUS GRANDE SURFACE. UNE PREMIERE SERIE D'ETUDES MONTRE QUE DES COUCHES DE QUALITE OPTIQUE PEUVENT ETRE OBTENUES SUR UNE LARGE GAMME D'EPAISSEUR AVEC DES SOLUTIONS SOUS-STOECHIOMETRIQUES EN EAU. LES SPECTRES FTIR DES DEPOTS ISSUS DE CES SOLUTIONS ONT ETE DECONVOLUES. NOUS AVONS AINSI IDENTIFIE LES ESPECES CHIMIQUES ET SUIVI L'EVOLUTION DES COUCHES LORS DE TRAITEMENTS THERMIQUES. UNE TEMPERATURE MINIMALE DE 500 C EST NECESSAIRE POUR OBTENIR DES COUCHES DE SILICE PURE. NOUS AVONS DEFINI UN AUTRE TYPE DE PREPARATION DE SOLUTION EN DEUX ETAPES POUR LES SUBSTRATS THERMIQUEMENT FRAGILES, QUI PERMET D'ABAISSER CONSIDERABLEMENT LA TEMPERATURE DE POST-TRAITEMENT. LES ANALYSES FTIR ONT PERMIS DE METTRE EN EVIDENCE LES MECANISMES DETERMINANT LA QUALITE DES DEPOTS TRAITES A BASSE TEMPERATURE. NOUS AVONS AINSI OBTENUS DES COUCHES DENSES ET MECANIQUEMENT RESISTANTES APRES UN TRAITEMENT THERMIQUE DE 2 HEURES A 80 C. LES RESULTATS, TANT DU POINT DE VUE CHIMIQUE QUE TECHNOLOGIQUE, PERMETTENT D'ESPERER UNE INDUSTRIALISATION PROCHAINE POUR DES APPLICATIONS OPTIQUES.

Book Description
The book is a history of Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) as applied to the growth of semiconductor thin films (note that it does not cover the subject of metal thin films). It begins by examining the origins of MBE, first of all looking at the nature of molecular beams and considering their application to fundamental physics, to the development of nuclear magnetic resonance and to the invention of the microwave MASER. It shows how molecular beams of silane (SiH4) were used to study the nucleation of silicon films on a silicon substrate and how such studies were extended to compound semiconductors such as GaAs. From such surface studies in ultra-high vacuum the technique developed into a method of growing high quality single crystal films of a wide range of semiconductors. Comparing this with earlier evaporation methods of deposition and with other epitaxial deposition methods such as liquid phase and vapour phase epitaxy (LPE and VPE). The text describes the development of MBE machines from the early 'home-made' variety to that of commercial equipment and show how MBE was gradually refined to produce high quality films with atomic dimensions. This was much aided by the use of various in-situ surface analysis techniques, such as reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and mass spectrometry, a feature unique to MBE. It looks at various modified versions of the basic MBE process, then proceed to describe their application to the growth of so-called 'low-dimensional structures' (LDS) based on ultra-thin heterostructure films with thickness of order a few molecular monolayers. Further chapters cover the growth of a wide range of different compounds and describe their application to fundamental physics and to the fabrication of electronic and opto-electronic devices. The authors study the historical development of all these aspects and emphasise both the (often unexpected) manner of their discovery and development and the unique features which MBE brings to the growth of extremely complex structures with monolayer accuracy.

Book Description
Materials syntheses are more complex than syntheses of inorganic or organic compounds. Materials synthesis protocols often suffer from unclarities, irreproducibility, lack in detail and lack in standards. The need to change this situation is the main motivation for this book. It collects a number of detailed protocols, ranging from organic polymers to carbonaceous and ceramic materials, from gels to porous and layered materials and from powders and nanoparticles to films.

Book Description
Sol-Gel processing methods, first used historically for decorative and constructional materials, were extensively developed in the last century for applications such as glasses, ceramics, catalysts, coatings, composites and fibres. Today they are reaching their full potential, enabling the preparation of new generations of advanced materials not easily accessible by other methods yet using mild, low-energy conditions. The topic is therefore increasingly included in advanced undergraduate, MSc and PhD programmes in the areas of chemistry, physics and materials science. This concise introductory text, written at the advanced undergraduate/first-year postgraduate level, is also suitable as an introduction to the development, mechanisms, chemistry, characterisation methods and applications of the technique. It provides readers with an extensive yet concise grounding in the theory of each area of the subject and details the real and potential applications and the future prospects of sol-gel chemistry.
