Book Description
Excerpt from Dental Pathology and Surgery It had appeared to me that even eminent hospital surgeons were scarcely aware how serious are some of the maladies directly dependent on tooth - disease, and how largely the pathology of the teeth is associated with serious morbid changes in contiguous structures. The fairness of these remarks may be brie y illustrated by saying that Warty teeth had been mistaken for Exostoses of the jaw that Dentigerous Cysts had scarcely been recognised, and that the external orifice of an outward-pointing alveolar abscess, dependent on a carious tooth, was still constantly attributed to necrosed bone. Book Description
Excerpt from Oral Pathology and Practice: A Text-Book for the Use of Students in Dental Colleges and a Hand-Book for Dental Practitioners It has been the aim Of the author to consider as succinctly as is consistent with clearness the functional derangements Of all the oral tissues that properly fall within the compass of a broad dental practice. In addition to this there are certain constitutional dis orders, the effects Of which may be observed in and about the oral cavity, which have not as yet been incorporated into our specialty, and perhaps never will be, yet of which it is essential that the dentist should have sufficient knowledge to enable him to make a clear diagnosis, even if he should not purpose active remedial measures. Such disorders as facial paralysis, syphilis, and tumors have therefore been given a general consideration, but practitioners who wish to make a more exhaustive study Of those subjects are referred to special works upon them. It should not be expected that a writer would blindly' and unreservedly follow even accepted practice when in his opinion it is founded in error: such a course would make Of him a mere echo, and would inhibit originality and progress. If, therefore, the author has advanced his own ideas upon subjects concerning which there is a difference of Opinion, he believes them entitled to candid consideration in the light in which they are presented. If not found in harmony with clinical experience and Observation, they disprove themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Dentistry, Including Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Therapeutics, Dental Surgery and Mechanism The reputation and success of this text-book as an elementary treatise on the principles and practice of dentistry have been so appar ent, and so universally recognized for many years by the practitioner and student, that no words of commendation on our part need be said. It has reached every civilized country and been translated into several languages. The rapid advance of dental science, without a parallel when com pared with that of other professions, has necessitated repeated addi tions, until the present volume has attained a size greatly above any that has preceded it. In presenting the twelfth edition, it is with the hope that the efforts made to render the work such that it may receive the kind approval so generally bestowed upon the editions that have preceded it may be appreciated by those for whose benefit it has been prepared. It is an encouraging fact that the eleventh edition was exhausted some months before the present one was ready to be issued. Book Description
Excerpt from The Science and Practice of Dental Surgery IN submitting this work to my colleagues in the Dental Profession, I feel that a few intro ductory remarks may not be out of place. Dental Surgery has advanced so rapidly Within recent years, both in the many branches of science on which it is based and in the intricacies of manipu lative procedure, that the production of a new comprehensive work by a single writer has become almost an impossibility. Certain defects are usually associated with, if not necessarily inherent in, a'work by many writers, and one object that I have had in mind, from the commencement of the long period during which the work has been as continuously in hand as the demands of other duties permitted, has been to eliminate these defects as far as possible. I have endeavoured to impart unity of conception and style to the whole, and to prevent overlapping except where it seemed permissible that a particular subject should be presented from different points of view. Cross-references have been liberally inserted. Another object that I have had in view has been to combine the scientific with the practical, for neither is of much value to the practitioner without the other, and in a work of this kind it is desirable that their mutual interdependence should be brought prominently before the reader. The work does not represent any particular school of thought; the contributors belong not only to the United Kingdom but to the most distant parts of the Dominions beyond the Seas, and an effort has been made to include everything in pathology or practice, from whatever country or source, that might be of value to the modern practitioner. Obsolete theories in pathology or abandoned methods of treatment have been omitted, or only briefly referred to where their historical interest is great. In all these objects I have been well supported by my contributors, and I wish to take this opportunity of thanking them most sincerely for the careful way in which they have considered the principles laid down, and written their chapters in conformity with the scheme that I outlined; and also for allowing me so much freedom in making such alterations as I thought necessary in the interest of uniformity. Book Description
Excerpt from The Practice of Dental Medicine The Object Of the following work is to supply a need which has existed for some time. NO text book has covered the subjects herein proposed, and such technical literature as may be found in books and journals IS largely unclassified as to etiology, pathology, diagnosis, treatment, etc., and is thus unavailable for handy refer ence or systematic study. A still greater need, more and more in evidence as the demand 'for a higher education for dentists grows stronger and the meces sity for a more general knowledge Of medicine on their part becomes apparent, is for an explanation of the significance of dental and oral relations to certain general pathological conditions. This need is not supplied by medical colleges, for in these the teaching is not adapted to dental practice and the dental relations to the various subjects taught are not elucidated. It would seem that the time has come when the dentist should possess formulated rules and methods of practice in the medical treatment of dental cases. The effects of certain constitutional disorders upon the teeth and other oral structures are being better understood as time goes on, and the influence of local pathological conditions in the mouth upon other organs and tissues are in like manner being better comprehended; therefore the advanced teaching of to-day should give these subjects the consideration which their importance demands.
