Zambian Democracy and Political Struggles. A History of Zambia Politics and Environment. Zambia became independent in 1964 and is a republic governed by a president and a unicameral national assembly. It is a unitary state with an executive president who is both the head of state and government. After two decades of one-party rule, Zambia returned to multiparty elections in November 1991.
