Book Description
Redefinitions of EU borders (enlargements, Brexit), geopolitical challenges (conflicts, migrations, terrorism, environmental risks) and the economic and financial crises have triggered debates on the common values that hold European countries and citizens together, justify public action and ensure the sustainability of European governance. This book discusses the genesis of and increasing references to "European values", their appropriation by diverse groups of actors and their impact on public action. It argues that European values are a broad and flexible symbolic repertoire, instrumental to serving diverging ends, and a resource for both negotiation and conflicts. Looking at the broader picture, the book reflects on the role of values in the institutionalization of the EU as a political order and paves the way to an assessment of its singularity in comparison with other polities across time and space. This text will be of key interest to scholars, students and practitioners in EU politics, comparative politics, IR, public policy, sociology and cultural studies.

Book Description
Since its foundation in 1992 the EU has been developing from an international organisation towards a European democracy. The Maastricht Treaty introduced the citizenship of the Union, while the Treaty of Amsterdam included the concept of democracy in the core values of the EU and 'Lisbon' construed the European Union as a democracy without turning the Union into a State. This development has not been foreseen by politicians and scholars. According to the prevailing theories the EU should have become either a sovereign State of Europe or a Europe of sovereign States. The theory of democratic integration, which is presented in this monograph, replaces the outdated paradigm of the Westphalian system of international relations with the civic perspective of democracy and the rule of law. From this angle, it seems obvious that, if two or more democratic states decide to share the exercise of sovereignty in a number of fields with the view to attain common goals, the organisation they establish for this purpose should be democratic too. The theory of democratic integration allows for the development of the EU to be summarised in the maxim that the Union is evolving from a Common Market to a Common Democracy. *** "Hoeksma reveals as false the widespread belief that a monetary union without a state is not viable." -- Yves Mersch, Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank *** "..encourages all Europeans to participate in the Union's democratic life." -- Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament *** "The theory of democratic integration provides the EU with a model of thinking, within which the Union can evolve from a common market towards a common democracy." -- Internationale Spectator [Subject: Politics]

Book Description
In the 2009 elections, the European centre-right emerged victorious, thus affirming its political domination in contemporary European politics. The aim of this book is not to provide an analysis of the factors that contributed to the EPP’s political prevalence. Instead, it is to help this large political family maintain its vigour of political thought and policy prescriptions. The book provides a forum for prominent centre-right thinkers to debate the major European problems of our times, with particular emphasis on the management of the financial crisis and the next institutional steps regarding the European integration project. It assembles the views of politicians, academics and think-tank fellows from different national backgrounds and dissimilar ideological perspectives, who unfold their vision for Europe’s future. Overall, the book attempts to both highlight and stimulate the centre-right contribution to the discussion of Europe’s main contemporary challenges.

Book Description
What are the ?European values? that we hear about so often? What are the links between European values and identity, belonging and citizenship? What is the role of memory politics? How do younger generations think about Europe and its values? Political scientist Heleen Touquet discusses these questions with fellow scholars and experts in the field of international politics, memory and polarization and extremism. Her interlocutors are François Foret (Université Libre de Bruxelles), expert on religion and secularism in Europe, scholar of memory and critical theorist Peter Verovsek (University of Sheffield) and scholar on extremism and polarization Cynthia Miller Idriss (American University, Washington DC).00The conversations took place within the framework of a lecture series on European values, citizenship and belonging at the University of Antwerp in the spring of 2020, organized in collaboration with UCSIA.00This book is the first in the series '(Talking about) European values & belonging'. The rule of law, democracy, human rights and human dignity are the core values of the European Union. Current debates about these values however display the frailty of their very notion. Both advocates and adversaries of the European Union invoke these values and step forward as their true representatives, just as much as left-wing, right-wing and populist politicians. The '(Talking about) European values & belonging' series brings together experts and scholars to discuss and reflect on the questions raised by the controversial issue of European values.

Book Description
The inside story of the European Fund for Strategic Investments from 2015 to 2020 told through interviews with the Managing Director, Deputy Managing Director, members of the Investment Committee and final beneficiaries across Europe. The architects of this €500 billion-plus programme, the head of the EU bank and the president of the European Commission, describe the genesis of this financial pillar of the Investment Plan for Europe. Then the people who ran one of the biggest economic stimulus programmes in history detail how they did it—and what the lessons are for policymakers responding to new crises, including the economic shock caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The European Fund for Strategic Investments has been one of the good news stories to emerge in a decade of economic uncertainty. It has gone well beyond its highly ambitious target of €500 billion in mobilised investments. The Juncker Plan has made a strong contribution to the 14 million jobs created in the EU between 2015 and 2020. It has become a success in co-financing projects that otherwise might not have been carried through. It has also charted the path towards new ways of financing. This is not only the case in relatively conventional areas, such as infrastructure, but also in sectors like research and innovation or the contribution to climate change mitigation. This is exactly what makes EFSI so ground-breaking: responding to the needs of the market through continuous financial innovation. The principle of the European Fund for Strategic Investments is here to stay. It has paved the way for its successor, the InvestEU programme, which is to be deployed under the 2021-2027 multiannual financial framework. This publication details why the programme was such a success.
