Although the Spanish Inquisition looms large in many conceptions of the early modern Hispanic world, relatively few studies have been made of the Spanish state and Inquisition s approach to book censorship in the seventeenth century. Merging archival and rare book research with a case study of the fiction of Baltasar Gracián, this book argues that privileged authors, like the Jesuit Gracián, circumvented publication strictures that were meant to ensure that printed materials conformed to the standards of Catholicism and supported the goals of the absolute monarchy. In contrast to some elite authors who composed readily transparent critiques of authorities and encountered difficulties with the state and Inquisition, others, like Gracián, made their criticisms covertly in complicated texts like El Criticón.

As Spain consolidated its Empire in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, discourses about the perfect Spanish man or “Vir” went hand-in-hand with discourses about another kind of man, one who engaged in the “abominable crime and sin against nature”—sodomy. In both Spain and Mexico, sodomy came to rank second only to heresy as a cause for prosecution, and hundreds of sodomites were tortured, garroted, or burned alive for violating Spanish ideals of manliness. Yet in reality, as Federico Garza Carvajal argues in this groundbreaking book, the prosecution of sodomites had little to do with issues of gender and was much more a concomitant of empire building and the need to justify political and economic domination of subject peoples. Drawing on previously unpublished records of some three hundred sodomy trials conducted in Spain and Mexico between 1561 and 1699, Garza Carvajal examines the sodomy discourses that emerged in Andalucía, seat of Spain’s colonial apparatus, and in the viceroyalty of New Spain (Mexico), its first and largest American colony. From these discourses, he convincingly demonstrates that the concept of sodomy (more than the actual practice) was crucial to the Iberian colonizing program. Because sodomy opposed the ideal of “Vir” and the Spanish nationhood with which it was intimately associated, the prosecution of sodomy justified Spain’s domination of foreigners (many of whom were represented as sodomites) in the peninsula and of “Indios” in Mexico, a totally subject people depicted as effeminate and prone to sodomitical acts, cannibalism, and inebriation.

De La eugenesia y otras desgracias (1922) (Eugenics and Other Evils) los lectores de Chesterton en lengua española tenían poca o casi ninguna noticia, pues hasta la fecha solo se había publicado una traducción en Argentina en la década de los 60. De ahí el interés de esta nueva edición española ahora traducida por Aurora Rice y presentada con una extensa y documentada introducción de Salvador Antuñano. Se añade también un ensayo sobre la reforma social y la problemática del control de la natalidad que permanecía inédito en español y que Chesterton publicó separadamente en 1927. Gilbert Keith Chesterton (Londres, 1874-Beaconsfield, 1936). Una amplia parte de su tiempo y de su esfuerzo la dedicó a lo que para él era de suma importancia: la justicia social. Obras como Lo que está mal en el mundo o El perfil de la cordura recogen algunas de sus ideas políticas, económicas, culturales. En ellas aparecen también los principios de su filosofía aplicados a las situaciones concretas de la vida social. Y aunque no todos compartan la imagen de la realidad que allí expone, la mayoría suele apreciar su calidad como escritor, el esplendor de su ingenio, la hondura de sus ideas y su contundente sentido común. Y, por supuesto, todos encuentran en sus obras materia de reflexión, discusión y, como testimonia Borges, felicidad. La eugenesia y otras desgracias es una de estas obras. A Scholarly Edition of the Gamaliel (Valencia: Juan Jofre, 1525) is a modernized edition of a late medieval devotional that formed part of the narrative tradition of La Vengeance de Nostre-Seigneur, which gained popularity from the twelfth century. The 1525 compendium Gamaliel is comprised of seven loosely related texts, including the Passion of Christ, the Destruction of Jerusalem, the biographies of Lazarus, Mary, and Martha, and the Slaughter of the Innocents. The Gamaliel was reproduced in over a dozen Spanish and Catalan printed editions in the first half of the sixteenth century until it was banned by the Spanish Inquisition beginning in 1558, likely due to its anonymous authorship and apocryphal content.
