Book Description
This is the fictional story of three young women who are raised on the Great Plains of eastern New Mexico during the Great Depression era and are best friends in their high school senior year when the US enters WWII. These young women already know hardship and patience; they will learn about love and loss when their childhood abruptly ends. "It can't happen here" does not save Akiko from internment with her family as enemy aliens. Thereafter, Susan's and Clovie's experiences create opportunities to learn empathy, generosity, and unbiased thinking. Little Texas gave them clean air, wide horizons, the security of a small community. But the bigoted beliefs they learned as children in Little Texas (a term given 100 years ago to New Mexico counties that border Texas) lose their authoritative influence. Susan and Clovie challenge these beliefs and boundaries. I created characters and scenarios that unveil those prevalent in 1930s-1940s Little Texas. Though this is a work of fiction, its characters and their stories are fiction, I sincerely tried to accurately represent and fairly analyze the setting. When I first learned in 2019 about the forced removal of Clovis' Japanese residents in 1942, to prison conditions at Fort Stanton, I was immediately appalled. Writing this novel helped me understand how "it could happen here".

Book Description
Winter owns most of the year at the South Pole, starting in mid-February and ending in early November. Total darkness lasts for months, temperatures can drop below -100 degrees Fahrenheit, and windchill can push temperatures to -140 degrees. At those temperatures a person not protected with specialized clothing and an understanding of how to wear it would be reduced to an icicle within minutes. Few people on the planet can say they know what it feels like to walk in the unworldly, frigid winter darkness at the South Pole, but Wayne L. White can—having walked several thousand miles and never missing a day outside during his stay, regardless of the conditions. As the winter site manager of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica, White was responsible for the selection, training, and health and safety of the forty-two- and forty-six-person crews. Motivated by the determination and bravery of historical pioneers such as Roald Amundsen, Robert Falcon Scott, and Ernest Shackleton, White honed his leadership skills to guide a diverse group of experienced and talented craftsmen, scientists, and artisans through three winters, the longest term of any winter manager. Despite hardships, disasters, and watching helpless as a global pandemic unfolded far beyond their horizon, his crews prevailed. In Cold White documents his time in these extreme elements and offers a unique perspective on the United States Antarctic Program at the South Pole.

Book Description
Folks all over West Texas and eastern New Mexico will tell you: Cowdens have been ranching here for as long as anyone can remember. The Cowdens, in fact, have been at the forefront of the cattle business for 150 years. Arriving in Texas in the 1850s, Cowden men and women raised and trailed cattle, sought out water and better grazing land, tangled with Comanches—and helped extend the western line of Anglo settlement as they raised their families. They eventually moved to New Mexico, where they established the renowned JAL Ranch. Award-winning writer Michael Pettit, a Cowden descendant and former rancher, offers a compelling portrait of this genuine American ranching family. Riding for the Brand spans six generations and two states to serve up a real slice of the Old West, complete with cowboys and Indians, cattle and buffalo, open range and barbed wire. Pettit skillfully blends family saga with an urbanite’s firsthand look at life on today’s 50,000-acre Cowden Ranch, where the one dependable factor is the constant wind. Riding for the Brand traces the evolution of the Texas and New Mexico cattle business from the era of intimate ranching communities to today’s oil-enriched or corporate operations. But it’s also the story of one man’s search for identity through his connections to a family, a place, and a way of life.

Book Description
This book tells the true story of one familys dream trip. Like many young couples before having kids, Jim and Pam enjoyed traveling together to new places. Unlike most couples, their traveling days did not stop when kids came along. In fact, their love for travel infected their whole family. Every school break they would travel somewhere, to explore a new state or visit a far-off relative. What would it be like to spend a whole year traveling together? They tossed the idea around, considered the places they might travel and the people they might see. Especially alluring would be the special opportunities to knit their hearts together even tighter as a family. This idea grew into a reality. This book tells the story of that dream-come-true.
