Book Description
This book attempts to fill a vacuum by directing its attention to the XIX-Century Cuban Danza, in which lay the beginnings of Cuban music as a distinct national expression. An understanding of the development of the Danza from a classic European figure dance to a stylized piano piece, with characteristic Cuban qualities, is basic to an understanding of Cuban music. The foremost Cuban composer of the Danza was Ignacio Cervantes. A study of his output is, therefore, basic to an understanding of Cuban music. This study seeks to penetrate the confusion and controversy surrounding the origins of the Cuban Danza and to clarify its historical and stylistic traits. The path of the Danza is traced from Europe to Cuba and its development there throughout the XIX-Century, examining Cervantes' contribution and that of the other important composers of this dance form during that period.

Book Description
Ignacio Cervantes is one of Cuba's most influential composers and pianists. While studying at the Paris Conservatoire, he won top prizes in composition and performance and was praised by such luminaires as Franz Lizst. His most well-known and respected works are his series of several dozen Cuban dances, in which he synthesized European classical music and African rhythms, like the habanera and tango, into a new and unmistakably Cuban style. This arrangement for guitar presents five of the most distinctive and elegant of these Cuban dances, which we have titled Escenas (Scenes). Each of these dances was given a descriptive title by Cervantes, which creates a colorful narrative when played as set. They suit the intimate and energetic nature of the guitar perfectly, and are arranged in a manner that allows the performer to effortlessly present a unique interpretation."Scott Wolf's editions are so skillfully done, his arrangements sound as if they were written originally for the guitar" -Scott Tennant
