Le contexte d'évolution de l'urbanité dans l'agglomération de Dakar est combiné à l'émergence et/ou à l'affirmation de logiques identitaires. La religion est devenue, par la voie de ces réseaux, un facteur important de la construction territoriale. Cela va de la conquête de portions d'espaces à la création de nouveaux territoires légitimés par le religieux. Les réseaux socio-religieux en l'occurence ceux de la communauté catholique de Dakar ne sont pas seulement inscrits dans l'espace de l'agglomération, mais aussi produits par celui-ci ; ils sont dynamiques. Par leur dynamisme spatio-temporel, ils contribuent à structurer, développer et modifier le territoire de l'agglomération. Les "territoires-réseaux" qu'ils constituent, pourraient ainsi combiner l'ensemble des relations qui se tissent à l'intérieur des différentes structures urbaines. Et parallèlement à la géographie administrative, la géographie chrétienne et spécialement la géographie catholique évolue avec sa propre structuration et répond à ses propres normes d'organisation régies autour de deux modèles : ponctuel et surfacique ; elle fonctionne entre le local et le global. C'est à travers les comportements et les stratégies développés par la communauté pour intégrer le religieux dans l'urbain que se dessinne la territorialité. Pour la plupart, l'adhésion à des réseaux associatifs ou communautaires n'est pas systématique, l'appartenance à l'entité géographique ou à la structure les hébergeant (l'entreprise, l'établissement,...) est souvent nécessaire. Une des règles principales du fonctionnement des réseaux socio-religieux est qu'ils font ressortir deux niveaux d'occurences auxquels il faut s'interésser : le niveau individuel du fidèle appartenant ou non à l'organisation et le niveau collectif de l'organisation réseautique elle-même

Originally published in 1978 as part of the Urbanization in Developing Countries series, this is an interdisciplinary study of rapid urban growth in West Africa. Gugler and Flanagan first explore the history of the cities of the early West African empires and they draw on the work of social anthropologists and sociologists, as well as demographers, economists, geographers, historians, political scientists and social psychologists. They then describe the urban explosion that the region experienced after World War II. They explore the implications of widespread urban unemployment and underemployment, the housing crisis and the emergence of metropolitan areas such as Lagos.
