Book Description
This book appears at a time when molecular cytogenetics is positioned to make a significant impact upon evolutionary studies, enabling problems of chromosomal structure and change to be critically assessed. It is an up-to-date and comprehensive survey of the cytogenetics of a major class of animals, including all three amphibian orders, with chapters authored by international leaders in the field.Amphibian Cytogenetics and Evolution will be of interest to classical and molecular cytogeneticists, systematicists, evolutionary biologists, herpetologists, and anyone using amphibians in genetic research. Offers the only current and comprehensive survey of amphibian cytogenetics Gives authoritative and in-depth coverage of topics of present interest Reviews general cytogenetic topics Presents new insights into evolutionary changes in chromosome structure and amphibian phylogeny and relationships including: Phylogenetic analysis of chromosome data, Current techniques of cytogenetic analysis, Examination of all three amphibian orders

Book Description
Since the publication of the first Atlas of Mammalian Chromosomes in 1967 the continuous compilation of mammalian karyotypes has become a useful instrument in cytologic and taxonomic studies. Technical advances in preparing mitotic cells from nonmammalian vertebrates have since allowed a better comparison of taxa in fishes, amphibia, reptiles, and birds. In these fields the literature is also widely scat tered; and it has become difficult to survey such information, published as well as unpublished, by nonspecialists. These were among the reasons for the new endeavor of compiling a chromosome atlas for nonmammalian vertebrates. An annual publication is planned with presentation of between 10 and 15 karyotypes from each class. In this second volume, 52 species are presented. For convenience in future colation, the numbering system employs class abbreviations, viz. , P-Pisces, Am-Amphibia, R-Reptilia, and Av-Aves. Within each class, the numbers are necessarily consecutive. In general the karyotypes are laid out following the format employed in An Atlas of Mammalian Chromosomes. Whenever possible both sexes are represented, even though sexual chromosomal dimorphism is not (currently) evident. When the sex chromosomes are known, they are so indicated by conventional nomenclature (XX/XY or ZW /ZZ). In the karyotypes of birds the so-called microchromosomes are grouped together at the end without an attempt at complete enumeration, which is presently impossible. They are usually considered as acrocentrics, but a few are distinctly biarmed.

Book Description
In this special issue, researchers show an updated, complete picture of living reptiles' cytogenetic, genomic, and molecular evolution. The most recent and relevant results of conventional and molecular studies are reported. A possible evolutionary model of the reptiles' chromosome is presented based on chromosome painting and mapping results. Morphology, structure, and molecular composition of reptiles' chromosomes are discussed. Specific topics include the presence and evolution of transposable elements, Hox genes, genome size and composition, and the level heterochromatin methylation. Sex chromosome evolution, mechanisms of meiotic recombination, and the evolution and chromosome localization of specific repetitive DNAs are also examined. This publication is of great interest for all students of cytogenetics, zoology, evolutionary biology, and molecular biology.

Book Description
Reptiles occupy a key position in the evolution of terrestrial vertebrates. Their evolutionary history is well known, they show a wide morphological and ecological variety, and they have a particularly complex system of sex differentiation, ranging from strict genetic determination with or without differentiated sex chromosomes to strict thermal determination. This thematic issue presents diverse facets of reptilian cytogenetics and genomics including - a study of the genome structure based on the analysis of two proto-oncogenes - the existence and evolution of transposable elements - the role of molecular and chromosomal variations in phylogenetic processes - a study of chromosome composition through isolation of specific sequences and chromosome painting - the involvement of chromosomes in sex determination and the coevolutionary interaction between sex chromosomes, genome organization and temperature - the hybrid origin of parthenogenetic lizards Providing an up-to-date overview of what is currently known about molecular cytogenetics, genome organization and evolution in reptiles, this publication will be of interest to researchers in the fields of cell biology, cytogenetics, genetics, molecular biology, molecular evolution, phylogenesis and zoology.
