Book Description
The folktales of A. N. Afanas’ev represent the largest single collection of folktales in any European language and perhaps in the world. Widely regarded as the Russian Grimm, Afanas’ev collected folktales from throughout the Russian Empire in what are now regarded as the three East Slavic languages, Byelorusian, Russian, and Ukrainian. The result of his own collecting, the collecting of friends and correspondents, and in a few cases his publishing of works from earlier and forgotten collections is truly phenomenal. In his lifetime, Afanas’ev published more than 575 tales in his most popular and best-known work, Narodnye russkie skazki. In addition to this basic collection he prepared a volume of Russian legends, many on religious themes, an anthology of mildly obscene tales, and voluminous writings on Slavic folk life and Slavic mythology. His works were subject to the strict censorship of ecclesiastical and state authorities that lasted until the demise of the Soviet Union at the end of the twentieth century. Overwhelmingly, his particular emendations were of a stylistic nature, while those of the censors mostly concerned content. The censored tales are generally not included. Up to now, there has been no complete English-language version of the Russian folktales of Afanas’ev. This translation is based on L. G. Barag and N. V. Novikov’s edition (Moscow: Nauka, 1984-1986), widely regarded as the authoritative edition. The present edition includes commentaries to each tale as well as its international classification number.

The Wind Warrior
Author: Vella Munn
Publisher: Macmillan
ISBN: 0812538765
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 351
Book Description
The Chumash, who lived along the coast north of present-day Los Angeles, dwelled in harmony with the land, worshiping gods and spirits of their own. Then the Spanish came and drove them from their home places, cutting them off from sources of food and from places of worship. Any Indians captured by the Spanish were forced into virtual slavery in the well-guarded missions. Assigned to protect a mission from marauding Chumash, a proud colonel in the Spanish army has moved not just himself and his men but his wife and daughter from the safety of Mexico City to the rough life of Alta California. His wife is content to do the bidding of the priest and her husband, but his daughter, Lucita, is excited by the wild, beautiful landscape that surrounds her. On their journey to the mission, she glimpses a half-naked Chumash warrior and, not yet knowing that he is her fate, finds herself fascinated with his strength and the power of his gaze. Black Wolf was once a captive of the Spanish priests. He knows that the new garrison has come to hunt him down, for he gravely wounded one of the mission guards. He does not understand why he showed himself to the Spanish woman, but something about her draws him near. Her father, determined to rid himself of a headstrong, troublesome daughter who might jeopardize his career by becoming too friendly with the natives, brings Lucita a powerful suitor. Surprised at herself, she feels torn between Pablo Portola, who offers her refuge in her own society, and Black Wolf, who offers her only a life that will always be in peril.

Publisher: Ashley Olivier
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 410
Book Description
" She will make them pay, even if it destroys her. The Crimson Witch is determined to free her undead army and wreak havoc on the world, both seen and unseen. Death would be too kind a mercy for those faerie traitors compared to the torment she has endured. And she will get her vengeance, no matter the cost. Four enchanted objects, each sealed by dark blood and ancient magic, have bound her. But they also hold the power to set her free once and for all. After being captured and imprisoned in the Black Lake, Enya and the others must find a way to undo the wicked damage done once they escape, even if that means uniting feuding faerie courts, runaway royals, and rival gangs. Deals have been made in the shadows, each at an impossible cost. But with lies and secrecy around every turn and two more hidden relics remaining, Enya can't be sure whose word she can trust, if anyone's. With everything hanging in the balance, can unlikely alliances keep the world from falling into darkness? Fans of Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas, and The Wicked King by Holly Black can't get enough of this action-packed story! "
