“Trick-or-treat!" Jenny shouted, her voice echoing through the crisp autumn night. The words hung in the air, carried by a gust of wind that rustled the dead leaves at her feet. Dressed as a witch, she stood alongside her friends, Dan, Connie, and Rhonda, who were costumed as a werewolf, a clown, and a ghost, respectively. Halloween was their favorite holiday of the year, and they couldn't wait to fill their pillowcases with candy. As they walked down Maple Street, their laughter and excited chatter filled the air, mingling with the distant screams of other trick-or-treaters and the occasional howl of a dog. The full moon hung low in the sky, casting long shadows that seemed to reach out like grasping fingers. Jenny shivered, pulling her witch's cloak tighter around her shoulders. "Is it just me, or is it colder than usual tonight?" she asked, her breath forming small clouds in front of her face. Dan, his werewolf mask pushed up on top of his head, nodded in agreement. "Yeah, it's weird. The weather report said it was supposed to be mild tonight." As they continued down the street, the houses began to change. The cheerful decorations and welcoming porch lights gave way to darkened windows and overgrown lawns. The group found themselves in a part of town they'd never explored before, where the streetlights flickered ominously and the air seemed thick with an unseen presence. "Guys, maybe we should head back," Rhonda suggested, her ghost costume billowing around her in the strengthening wind. "This doesn't feel right." Connie, usually the bravest of the group, hesitated. Her clown makeup, once cheerful, now seemed grotesque in the eerie light. "Come on, just one more house. Look at that one over there – it's got to have the best candy." She pointed to a house at the end of the street. It was a large, Victorian-style building with a peculiar aura about it. The structure loomed against the night sky, its weathered siding and peeling paint a testament to years of neglect. Gnarled trees flanked the property, their bare branches scraping against the upper windows like bony fingers.
