Writing on accidental injury often seems to occur from one of two perspec tives. One perspective is that of those involved in aspects of injury diagnosis and treatment and the other is that of those in the engineering and biologic sciences who discuss mechanical principles and simulations. From our point of view, significant information problems exist at the inter face: Persons in the business of diagnosis and treatment do not know how to access, use, and evaluate theoretical information that does not have obvious practical applications; persons on the theoretical side do not have enough real life field data with which to identify problems or to evaluate solutions. The ideal system provides a constant two-way flow of data that permits continuous problem identification and course correction. This book attempts to provide a state-of-the-art look at the applied bio mechanics of accidental-injury causation and prevention. The authors are recognized authorities in their specialized fields. GAO reported on how current federal airworthiness standards and operating rules influence the safety of small aircraft. The Airline Deregulation Act provides that, to the maximum extent feasible, air carrier passengers are to receive the same level of safety regardless of the size of the air carrier. However, GAO found that passengers flying on small aircraft are not provided with the same level of safety as passengers flying on larger aircraft. Both the airworthiness standards and the operating rules which the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has established for small aircraft are significantly less stringent than those it has established for larger aircraft. Since the late 1960's, FAA has studied, proposed, or made numerous changes to the airworthiness standards and operating rules. GAO found that these studies and changes either excluded or were not considered mandatory for aircraft with fewer than 10 seats because of the economic impact which such standards would have on the small aircraft industry. Some changes could be made at acceptable costs with substantial safety benefits to be gained; however, FAA has not prepared any cost/benefit analysis with regard to modifying the safety standards which apply to small aircraft.

A systematic treatment of current crashworthiness practice in the automotive, railroad and aircraft industries. Structural, exterior and interior design, occupant biomechanics, seat and restraint systems are dealt with, taking account of statistical data, current regulations and state-of-the-art design tool capabilities. Occupant kinematics and biomechanics are reviewed, leading to a basic understanding of human tolerance to impact and of the use of anthropometric test dummies and mathematical modelling techniques. Different types of restraining systems are described in terms of impact biomechanics. The material and structural behaviour of vehicle components is discussed in relation to crash testing. A variety of commonly used techniques for simulating occupants and structures are presented, in particular the use of multibody dynamics, finite element methods and simplified macro-elements, in the context of design tools of increasing complexity, which can be used to model both vehicles and occupants.
