Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive overview of Sámi education in a historical and internationally comparative perspective. Despite the cross-national character of the Sámi population, academic literature on Sámi education has so far been published within the different nation states in the Sámi area, and rarely in English. Exploring indigenous educational history around the world, this collection spans from Asia to Oceania to Sápmi and the Americas. The chapters frame Sámi school history within an international context of indigenous and minority education. In doing so, two narrative threads are established: both traditional history of education, and perspectives on the decolonisation of education. This pioneering book will appeal to students and scholars of Sámi education, as well as indigenous education around the world.

Book Description
Set in early 1900s, Minta Forever tells the story of nineteen-year-old Ella, who was caught in an abusive marriage and spent every day in fear of the wrath of her husband, Edmund, a devious, monstrous man. Every moment in his company was a new experience in torment, laced with the knowledge that he would likely kill her someday. But Edmund made an error in judgment when he manipulated her into marriage, for she was not the type of woman to be easily controlled; and when life with him became simply too unbearable, she devised a plan of escape. With nothing left to lose, Ella makes a desperate bid for freedom in the wilds of southwest Colorado. Under the assumed name "Minta," she finds work as a schoolmistress, quickly discovering that riding roughshod over a one-room school filled with children of various ages and temperaments presents its own unique set of difficulties--not to mention complications arising due to interest in her from the single men in the area. As her self-confidence returns and she feels the support of the community, she begins to face such challenges with relish, as opposed to dread. But not even Minta realizes the extent of Edmund's determination to hunt down his wayward bride, an obsession fueled by murderous rage. Will she be able to survive another encounter with him? And will her neighbors be willing to stand up for her once they find out that the Minta they thought they knew does not exist, but rather, a woman responsible for leading a potential killer into their midst?

Book Description
This comparative history of the Southern Ute and Mountain Ute peoples demonstrates how two culturally and historically related tribes, living side by side in southwestern Colorado, have taken very different paths in the modern era. Historian Richard K. Young makes a unique contribution to twentieth-century American Indian studies in his exploration of Colorado’s two remaining tribes’ divergent responses to federal Indian policies and changing economic and social conditions since passage of the Indian Reorganization Act in 1934. This book, which includes a review of the Utes’ precontact and nineteenth-century history, is based on primary research in U. S. and tribal documents, interviews with tribal members, and the few available secondary sources. By examining the Ute experience, Young highlights the dilemmas faced by all tribes with respect to economic development, energy and water resources, cultural identity and adaptation, spiritual life, tribal politics, and the struggle for tribal self-determination.
