The problem of lack of persistence to graduation of more African American males from the community college is complex. The complexities can be found in the micro, mezzo, and macro lived experiences of African American males at the community college. This phenomenological study sought to understand the role of culture as an agent in African American male persistence at a Community College. Two research questions were examined: (1) what micro, mezzo and macro cultural factors lead to African American male persistence? (2) What micro, mezzo and macro factors negatively impact African American male persistence? The findings revealed internal and external factors that led to African American male persistence at the community where this study was conducted. The findings also uncovered internal and external barriers that hinder African American male persistence at a Community College. The findings provided an in depth discussion, which led to implications and conclusion for social work leadership, practice and research in higher education.

African American male student athletes enrolled in community colleges have not been adequately investigated in the empirical literature for factors related to academic experiences, success, and departure. This research study extends the literature on African American male student athletes by examines factors that influence academic success. Specifically, this study explores factors that shape the educational experiences and outcomes of African-American male student athletes from a community college in an institutional environment setting where African American male student athletes constitute a significant population. In this study, I evaluate the following research questions: What are the experiences of African American male student athletes in a large urban public community college? What factors influence educational outcomes, including persistence and completion, for the African American male student athletes in a large urban public community college? The data source for the study is African American male student athletes who attend a California community college in Southern California. The data collection procedure consisted of interviews with African American male student athletes. Data analysis consisted of the following steps: transcription of interviews from the digital audio recordings, code transcript interviews and the identification of patterns in coded data for thematic analysis. Results indicated that for a majority of the African American male students, whom I interviewed, specialized academic and cultural programs, family and mentor support, and a desire to improve the lives of their family members were the principal reasons for persisting. By contrast, results that emerged from interviews with staff members showed a concern about factors that affect African American male student retention, the lack of social integration skills, and existing cultural barriers, all of which negatively affected the persistence of African American athletes at the community college.

The purposes of this study were to examine the experiences of African American female students attending urban community colleges, to gain further understanding of how they interpret the meaning of persistence, and to identify the factors that affect their persistence. African American women attending community college in Los Angeles were interviewed on their educational experiences and the meaning of persistence to them. The results of this study will offer researchers and community college leaders a broader and more in-depth perspective into the essence of persistence for African American female students. By focusing on individual students rather than groups of students, the study examines how persistence works in the day-to-day lives of these students. The study expresses these women's concerns and may help make colleges more aware of their needs and issues.The significance of this study is threefold. The first is to help a minority group of students who currently are trying to benefit from a community college education to find a voice so that they can describe their college experiences.
