Excerpt from Crown Hymnal: Organist's and Teacher's Edition In view of the fact that plain song melodies were originally unaccompanied it follows that the accompaniments should be considered in the light of expediency Simply. Instances occur where the true spirit of the melody will conflict with harmonic rules, and in such cases it is always the melody which should be considered. An accompaniment Should never cover up or obscure the inherent characteristics of a melody. It should be subservient to the melody, preserving its rhythmic as well as its tonal characteristics. This is so important, that Should the case justify, the organist need not consider himself bound by the ordinary rules of harmony.
