Book Description
Cancer and Creativity is a dialogue between accounts by cancer patients and survivors and a more clinical consideration and theoretical discussion from a psychoanalytic point of view of using creativity in coping with serious illness. The contributions featured demonstrate the power of creative expression as a tool for dealing with somatic, chronic and potentially life-threatening illnesses, giving patients a way of expressing and managing their individual cancer journeys and its attendant emotional sequelae. Ten artist-patients and survivors, who were involved in several long-term art therapy groups, give accounts of their experiences with cancer and with their support group, where they create paintings, embroidery, digital photography, comic books, maps and other works to express their experiences of being diagnosed and treated for cancer. The contributors describe their symptoms and their relationships to physicians and family members in words and visual representations. The book also addresses the experience of the public when they are confronted with art by cancer patients. Dreifuss-Kattan's own work as a psychoanalyst and art therapist informs her approach to the art space as what Winnicott calls a "transitional space," influenced by both the personal psychological experience and the physical environment. Dreifuss-Kattan closes her discussion with a reflection on terminal cancer care and the complex transferential and countertransferential relationship between patient and therapist. The book ends with a practical guide for both therapy groups, as well as individuals at home, to creatively address their experiences with cancer and its treatments. Cancer and Creativity will be of great interest to psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic psychotherapists, psychooncologists and art therapists, as well as health professionals working in oncology and in palliative care.

Book Description
Cancer is many things and brings up so many emotions. But it can also be an opportunity. Being smacked in the face with our own mortality changes things. It forces us to ask uncomfortable questions like: What does this all mean? How can I get through this? What are ways to help me process all the stuff coming at me? If the answers to those questions are shrouded in confusion and negativity, you're not alone. There's nothing scarier than confronting our deepest fears, so we don't. We're afraid to get to know ourselves, and so we often have no idea how to love ourselves. Cancer takes so much away, but there will be healing, and there will be hope. Hard to believe it will start with a doodle. That's right. A doodle. We're not expecting Picasso. You see, Creativity Through Cancer is not about learning to become an artist. It's about using art as a tool for creative self-expression. It's about finding a safe space where you can process your complicated feelings in a positive way. It's about digging down deep, far beyond fear to the place where your inner wisdom lies. With this workbook, you will learn to look at the creative process differently. You'll use imagery and symbols to bring your emotions to life using pens, markers, cut-out images, and other materials that you already have. You'll begin to recognize the beauty in the creative process and to appreciate the art you make - because it is yours. And you are worth loving.

Book Description
Creative Prescriptions for Women with Cancer is a creative first-aid kit that specifically addresses many of the challenges faced by cancer patients. This guide will help you to tap into your inherent ability to be creative and its potential to heal physically, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually. Creativity is your "prescription" to reduce stress, raise spirits, and facilitate the healing process. "Annette does an incredible job of providing women who are healing from cancer a portable art studio, and journal so they can tap into the healing that happens when we are creating joyfully. This book is the framework for escaping the fear and stress of cancer through the prescription of creating authentically. How wonderful that women do not need to be good at art or have any art experience in order to add this form of play and expression to their treatment plan. This book is a great resource to promote mind-body-spirit healing and a sense of wholeness and control over the healing process. I highly recommend adding this wonderful method of self-reflection and self-discovery to anyone's healing game plan!" - Debra Nicholson, Director of Community Outreach Center For Advancement in Cancer Education "I love it! This book is a refreshing take on the healing process. New research shows the most influential factor on our health and healing-even more than diet, smoking, or genetics- is our emotional wellbeing. Many of us grew up without the tools to support emotional healing, or feel such progress can only be achieved through long difficult therapy sessions. I love how Annette has created an easy and fun way for people to experience emotional healing. It is a must-have in every woman's cancer-fighting arsenal!" - Christine Horner M.D, Waking the Warrior Goddess: Dr. Horner's Program to Protect Against & Fight Breast Cancer "In this lovely book, Annette Tello provides a "safe space to express and honor your thoughts and feelings". In our busy, stress- filled world, this oasis of creative time may be just the healing you need." - Ellen Speert, ATR-BC, REAT The California Center for Creative Renewal Annette Tello M.S. is a counselor and coach. Book Description
As she faced a future of treatment, surgery, and uncertainty upon her diagnosis with Breast Cancer aged 31, Claire turned to creativity for its healing powers. Finding strength in words and pictures alike, the young woman started a creative journal which became an outlet as each day brought new physical and emotional challenges. Through vibrant sketches that documented this difficult time paired with affirming captions alongside them; Claire found solace in art form during her journey toward recovery. Claire's journey through 2022 has been beautifully documented in her sketchbook, an artwork all on its own. This powerful piece captures the struggles of cancer and how it affects day-to-day life and those moments we can all relate to. Her sketches offer a unique perspective that words alone could never express - come join Claire on this remarkable adventure. She has created a unique way of sharing her experiences with cancer, by creating art that provide an insightful and honest look into the day-to-day aspects of her life that many of us can relate to. She allows her readers to better understand her journey and how she has managed it by using pictures in place of words. These images allow us to connect with her on a much deeper level, since they are far more expressive than any amount of words ever could be. The beauty in these paintings not only helps give a greater understanding of Claire's story, but also shines a light on the everyday moments we often take for granted. Through her pictures, Claire opens a beautiful window for us - offering us an intimate glance into all she is going through with grace and strength. C is more than a letter--it's a symbol of courage, strength, and hope that one brave soul named Claire embodied while fighting cancer. With artistry, she created 'A Year With C' to honour her journey - but its impact reaches far beyond her own story; it provides support for friends, family members, or total strangers who need an extra dose of inspiration in their lives. This book will remain as evidence long into the future: there truly is power in living with heart! 31% of the profits will be donated to Breast Cancer Care to represent the 31 women who die each day from secondary breast cancer.

Book Description
Cancer Stories provides a vivid depiction of the inner experience of the cancer patient as revealed by the accounts of, and pictures created by, the patients themselves. Drawing on her clinical work as well as an extensive autobiographical literature, Dreifuss-Kattan takes the reader on a deeply moving journey through the psychological realities of cancer, beginning with the initial shock of diagnosis and continuing through the multiple treatments for cancer -- surgery, radiation, chemotherapy -- with their frequently harrowing side-effects. She then demonstrates how psychotherapy and art therapy can be valuable additions to the treatment of cancer patients, fostering creativity which, in turn, can be the vehicle for achieving new psychological integration even in the face of impending death.
