Under the various subjects will be found helpful suggestions not only upon the work in the school-room, but also suggestions on private study for the teachers. We feel sure that there are many honest, conscientious teachers, who are not satisfied with their present qualifications for their work, but are not sure just what to do or what course to pursue in order to make progress and to better prepare themselves for the school-room and its duties. Owing to the multiplicity of books at this time, the average public-school teacher is at a loss to know what is best for him, when he needs a book on any special subject. The State Board of Examiners has suggested under each subject books that are among the best. It is not expected that the average teacher will purchase all of the books on any one subject. If only one can be purchased, we think the first one named under a given subject should be selected. We would like especially to impress upon the teachers the importance of making, if necessary, a sacrifice in order to have some good educational books. You should study the history and the science of education. You should become acquainted with some of the master minds in the teaching profession. Our successful lawyers study law. Our successful physicians study medicine. Our successful business men study business, and no less true is it, that our successful teachers study teaching. Let not any teacher throw aside this book, with the idea that it may do some good to teachers who are in the schoolroom for eight or ten months in the year, but for a teacher of three or four months work it will be of no service. And here the difficulty of discrimination begins; for the fact that an institution announces a fourteen unit admission requirement and outlines an elaborate course of study leading to an A. B. Degree does not necessarily mean that students are actually pursuing such a course - they may be working merely for a B. D. Or an L. I. Degree! And yet, beginning with September, 1911, there are, in addition to the four colleges already discussed, twenty-six women's colleges in the South announcing an admission requirement of from fourteen to sixteen units, and seven others with almost equal claims. I have, therefore, included in my second group thirty-three institutions offering from three to four years of work above college entrance requirements. In an attempt to make some slight distinction, I have arranged them under the following sub-heads based on their require ments for admission to special study schools. Excerpt from High School Act: Nineteen Hundred and Nine; Information, Regulations, Suggested Courses of Study Ninety-six State-aided high schools are now in operation in South Carolina. Though these are distributed among thirty-six counties, Anderson, Greenville, Orangeburg and Marion are the only counties qualifying for the full amount allowed by the High School Act. The Legislature, at its last session, raised the appropriation to $60,000.00, and this increase provides for the establishment of at least twenty-five additional high schools. In no case will the establishment of a high school be allowed to impair the efficiency of the common school. Under the amended Act of 1909, any village with less than four hundred population may establish a high school, if fifteen pupils are enrolled above the seventh grade. Every high school district must levy at least a two-mill tax for either high school or common school purposes. Special attention is called to Regulation No. 17 relative to high school salaries. In village and rural schools employing four teachers, one teacher will be allowed to divide time between high school and common school departments. State aid for the school year 1909-1910 will not be granted until each school has made application on the form prescribed by the State High School Board. The amount of State aid will, in each instance, be determined partly by enrollment and partly by the character of work done. Excerpt from The University of North Carolina Record, Vol. 69: High School Number; Suggestion to Teachers Accredited Schools; January 1909 The subjects accepted for entrance are arranged in two groups designated respectively Required Subjects and Elective Subjects. The term Required Subjects is used of those sub jects which are required of all students who intend to pursue a regular course of any description. The term Elective Sub jects is used of those subjects which are offered as alterna tives in choice, (as, for example, between Latin and Greek), as well as of subjects not required in any sense for any of the regular courses. Thus French, German, Greek, Latin, etc., appear in the list of Elective Subjects because, though required for entrance to some courses, (see tables below), on the other hand, for entrance to other courses they may be offered simply as alternatives to make up the fifteen required units. Every subject in both lists has a valuation by units as indicated below. A total of 15 units selected from both lists is necessary for unconditioned entrance to the Univer sity. A candidate for entrance to any one of the courses leading to a bachelor's degree, must offer all the studies in the list of required subjects and, in addition, studies enough from the list of elective subjects to make the total of 15 units in all. At the discretion of the Committee on Entrance Cer tificates students may be admitted with conditions, provided the conditions are of such nature that, in the judgment of the Committee, they may be removed according to the regulation which follows.
