Book Description
Excerpt from Courses of Study for the High Schools of North Carolina, 1926 In the present publication, each subject is taken up separately and treated rather fully in the light Of its relations to all the other subjects and as a justification of its place in the curriculum. The Objectives ih herent in each subject are brought out in some detail. Outlines Of method are set forth and sources of material are given. A select bibliography accompanies the course in each subject. This publication is not intended to serve as a source book but as a guide to the young teacher who desires to increase her efficiency through a greater familiarity with the large body Of information that relates to her teaching field. It merely undertakes to conserve her time and energy by directing her to the sources. It is rich in suggestions, but it carefully avoids any appearance Of pre scribing either what work shall be done or the manner in which the work shall be done. The expansion of the public high schools in the State makes necessary on the part Of superintendents and principals a careful study Of high school organization and administration, in order that the public funds may be expended in the most economical way, and in order that the greatest possible returns in education may be secured from this expenditure. It is hoped that this bulletin will aid the school Officials in providing proper high school facilities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The North Carolina High School Bulletin, 1912, Vol. 3 In this paper, however, 'my interest is primarily with the hundred and thirty-seven or more colleges for women that are not within the fold of the Association of Colleges of the Southern States. And here the difficulty of discrimination begins; for the fact that an institution announces a fourteen unit admission requirement and outlines an elaborate course of study leading to an A. B. Degree does not necessarily mean that students are actually pursuing such a course - they may be working merely for a B. D. Or an L. I. Degree! And yet, beginning with September, 1911, there are, in addition to the four colleges already discussed, twenty-six women's colleges in the South announcing an admission requirement of from fourteen to sixteen units, and seven others with almost equal claims. I have, therefore, included in my second group thirty-three institutions offering from three to four years of work above college entrance requirements. In an attempt to make some slight distinction, I have arranged them under the following sub-heads based on their require ments for admission to special study schools. Book Description
Excerpt from The University of North Carolina Record, Vol. 105: January, 1913 The better professional training of the teacher is the great est problem which American education has to face today. Not only the embryo' teacher, but the teacher in active service, must get and keep in touch with the best that is being done and said in the field of education if our educational system is not finally to break down of its own weight. For the teacher Who-cannot afford the time to study at some institution, there is still open the recourse of the reading of professional books. But treatises on education are produced today in such numbers that it is often very difficult to win now the wheat from the chaff, and pick those books which will be of some definite service. Mere titles sometimes tell little, advertisements often bewilder more than they aid. From time to time, there have come to the Department of Education requests for lists of books on special topics or in the general field of educational theory. This bulletin is an attempt to give a descriptive list of books of value to two classes of teachers; to superintendents of school systems and to high school teachers and principals. It is hoped later to issue bulletins having a more definite reference to other class es of teachers, but limitations of space have made necessary this restriction in the present publication. Books dealing only with elementary school problems, with those of the rural school, the farm-life school, etc., have been with one or two exceptions, omitted, since it seemed best to focus on high school problems and those of general reference, rather than to attempt to scatter ove-r the whole field in such limited space.
