Book Description
Excerpt from Cosmopolitan Views of American Finance Exemption from taxation would place these bonds on an even footing with most other money investments in our country, and the amount of capital commonly loaned at low rates or lying idle in our Banks, Insurance and Trust Companies, would gradu ally be absorbed thereby. These long four per cent. Untaxed bonds would always be in demand for settle ments, estates and trusts of all kinds, which investments, as our country grows richer, are steadily increasing. Many persons in Europe have been tempted by the high rate of interest to invest in our bonds. The great majority of such investments have been made in the face of supposed risk, and by the more daring and less conservative class of investors. A very large preportion is even now held by speculators, or by business houses for the employment of balances. It is closely questioned, whether any large percentage of our bends has been bought for permanent investment by the great capitalists and moneyed institutions. The very uncertain term of the bond itself would almost eon firm this doubt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Latino Immigrants in the United States
Author: Ronald L. Mize
Publisher: Polity
ISBN: 0745647421
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 209
Book Description
This timely and important book introduces readers to the largest and fastest-growing minority group in the United States - Latinos - and their diverse conditions of departure and reception. A central theme of the book is the tension between the fact that Latino categories are most often assigned from above, and how those defined as Latino seek to make sense of and enliven a shared notion of identity from below. Providing a sophisticated introduction to emerging theoretical trends and social formations specific to Latino immigrants, chapters are structured around the topics of Latinidad or the idea of a pan-ethnic Latino identity, pathways to citizenship, cultural citizenship, labor, gender, transnationalism, and globalization. Specific areas of focus include the 2006 marches of the immigrant rights movement and the rise in neoliberal nativism (including both state-sponsored restrictions such as Arizona’s SB1070 and the hate crimes associated with Minutemen vigilantism). The book is a valuable contribution to immigration courses in sociology, history, ethnic studies, American Studies, and Latino Studies. It is one of the first, and certainly the most accessible, to fully take into account the plurality of experiences, identities, and national origins constituting the Latino category.

Publisher:
ISBN: 9781614286226
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 300
Book Description
What began as a small mining camp during the Colorado Silver Boom of the late nineteenth century has since become the preferred getaway of the world's elite. Treasured for what's above ground rather than below, Aspen, Colorado has a storied history almost as dense as the directory of A-listers who have adopted the jewel of Pitkin County as their second home, or who have settled in its slopes indefinitely. With an introduction from longtime resident Aerin Lauder, Aspen celebrates and pays homage to the stark glamour, the working-class history, and the romance of the virtually untouched landscape that gives the town the unique charisma that continues to draw new devotees with each season. Exploring the rustic-chic atmosphere of the Hotel Jerome, the architectural excellence of Herbert Bayer's restored Wheeler Opera House, and local culture found at Schlomo's Deli & Grill, to name a few, this deluxe volume is brought to life with stunning current and historical imagery capturing the prodigious evolution of this mountain town over the last century.
