Cet ouvrage se veut une contribution au débat sur la législation italienne relative à la fin de vie, compte tenu de la demande de légiférer qui a été faite à deux reprises par la Cour constitutionnelle italienne. Cette question concerne évidemment la médecine, la souffrance et la spiritualité des malades et de leurs familles, mais aussi l'ensemble de la société civile, en Italie et à l'étranger. Cette réflexion est particulièrement urgente en Italie, pays aujourd'hui de plus en plus laïque et multiculturel, mais elle est également nécessaire en France, où la légalisation de l'euthanasie fait l'objet d'un débat animé et où la question fait partie des enjeux de la campagne présidentielle de 2022. Et au Portugal également, où le président de la République a suspendu la promulgation du décret règlementant les circonstances et les conditions dans lesquelles la mort médicalement assistée n'est pas punissable. Ce livre est aussi le témoignage d'un bénévole dans l'unité de soins palliatifs d'un hôpital bruxellois qui, après treize ans d'activité, souhaite partager avec le lecteur un douloureux constat : la loi belge de 2002 dépénalisant l'euthanasie a créé les conditions d'une déshumanisation de l'accompagnement de la fin de vie et une transformation du corps médical et de l'ensemble de la société civile en Belgique. Aujourd'hui, l'euthanasie est communément acceptée en Belgique, par une application arbitrairement extensive de la loi, comme étant l'un des choix thérapeutiques pour la fin de vie : une maladie incurable avec un mauvais pronostic à court terme et des douleurs intolérables n' est plus une condition préalable nécessaire. Une dangereuse pente glissante conduit à des extensions arbitraires des critères d'applicabilité de la loi par rapport aux intentions annoncées par le législateur. De nombreuses transgressions ne sont pas sanctionnées. Comme la Suisse pour le suicide, la Belgique alimente le tourisme de la mort pour les citoyens européens qui vivent dans des pays où l'euthanasie est punie par le Code pénal.

Ces œuvres font partie de la collection de l’abbé Mignot, elles ont été léguées à la Donation royale et mises en dépôt au Musée L. À travers ce livre, le Musée souhaite mettre en valeur le travail de conservation/restauration mené à l’Institut royal du patrimoine artistique ( IRPA ) grâce au Fonds Baillet Latour. In the sixteenth century, a period of proliferating transatlantic travel and exploration, and, latterly, religious civil wars in France, the ship is freighted with political and religious, as well as poetic, significance; symbolism that reaches its height when ships—both real and symbolic—are threatened with disaster. The Direful Spectacle argues that, in the French Renaissance, shipwreck functions not only as an emblem or motif within writing, but as a part, or the whole, of a narrative, in which the dynamics of spectatorship and of co-operation are of constant concern. The possibility of ethical distance from shipwreck—imagined through the Lucretian suave mari magno commonplace—is constantly undermined, not least through a sustained focus on the corporeal. This book examines the ways in which the ship and the body are made analogous in Renaissance shipwreck writing; bodies are described and allegorized in nautical terms, and, conversely, ships themselves become animalized and humanized. Secondly, many texts anticipate that the description of shipwreck will have an affect not only on its victims, but on those too of spectators, listeners, and readers. This insistence on the physicality of shipwreck is also reflected in the dynamic of bricolage that informs the production of shipwreck texts in the Renaissance. The dramatic potential of both the disaster and the process of rebuilding is exploited throughout the century, culminating in a shipwreck tragedy. By the late Renaissance, shipwreck is not only the end, but often forms the beginning of a story.

How have we thought “the body”? How can we think it anew? The body of mortal creatures, the body politic, the body of letters and of laws, the “mystical body of Christ”—all these (and others) are incorporated in the word Corpus, the title and topic of Jean-Luc Nancy’s masterwork. Corpus is a work of literary force at once phenomenological, sociological, theological, and philosophical in its multiple orientations and approaches. In thirty-six brief sections, Nancy offers us at once an encyclopedia and a polemical program—reviewing classical takes on the “corpus” from Plato, Aristotle, and Saint Paul to Descartes, Hegel, Husserl, and Freud, while demonstrating that the mutations (technological, biological, and political) of our own culture have given rise to the need for a new understanding of the body. He not only tells the story of this cultural change but also explores the promise and responsibilities that such a new understanding entails. The long-awaited English translation is a bold, bravura rendering. To the title essay are added five closely related recent pieces—including a commentary by Antonia Birnbaum—dedicated in large part to the legacy of the “mind-body problem” formulated by Descartes and the challenge it poses to rethinking the ancient problems of the corpus. This volume is concerned with the eschatology of Origen, the great 3rd century theologian and philosopher of Alexandria. Of all the doctrines attributed to him, those on the resurrection of man and the end of days have evoked the most opposition and controversy, from Antiquity to the Patristic scholarship of today. Professor Crouzel argues that the thought of Origen himself has been consistently misunderstood and distorted, from the time of Methodius of Olympia onwards, and that renewed examination of Origen's own surviving writings can lead to a radically differing assessment of the orthodoxy of his views. Among the particular points discussed are Origen's doctrine of Purgatory, commonly supposed to be a particularity of the Latin Church, and the relationship in his thought between the final purification at the end of time and the spiritual purification of existence here on earth.
