Control, Computers, Communications in Transportation
Author: J.-P. Perrin
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483299015
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 299
Book Description
This volume investigates developments and future trends in transportation research and what effects they will have on society. The coverage is broad; including road (urban and motorway), rail and air-traffic control. The sections deal with safety aspects, modelling and simulation, the use of sensors and image processing. The final section covers the development and implementation of new route guidance systems. This up-to-date information will be of use to transport engineers, urban planners, operations research and systems scientists.

Energy Savings in Systems of Coordinated Traffic Signals, Especially with Automatic Updating (AUT).
Author: Ulf Hammarström
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Electronic traffic controls
Languages : en
Pages : 37
Book Description
Fuel consumption on passing through coordinated signalised junctions could be reduced by at least 12 % by the use of AUT. AUT is a most cost effective method based on existing equipment. AUT demands the facility to send traffic data from controllers to a central PC and to send updated time plan data back to the controllers. It has been estimated that in the test area the average cost reduction is SEK 1 000 000 per year and junction. The maximum investment cost for an AUT installation is SEK 100 000/junction. AUT makes it possible for the number of time plans per day to be increased, which in the test area could increase the fuel saving to 15%. Optimised signal control will reduce delay in the signal system. AUT does not directly deal with redistribution of traffic inside and outside the signal system due to the change in delay. By means of a traffic assignment model this effect has been estimated to be of minor importance in the test area and in the outside area. AUT includes the TRANSYT programme. A validation study from before has shown an overestimation of stops. In order to make a control of the validation result a simulation model based on statistical theory was developed for external link simulations. Simulated stops by TRANSYT were significantly higher than simulated by the statistical model. Since the deviation was systematic it was possible to include an automatic ad-justment of estimated effects but not in the optimisation process. This may be expected to result in a lack of effectiveness even if output data could be made representative.

ISBN: 9811536775
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 239
Book Description
This book comprises select proceedings of the International Conference on Sustainable Civil Engineering Practices (ICSCEP 2019). It covers several important aspects of sustainable civil engineering practices dealing with effective waste and material management, natural resources, industrial products, energy, food, transportation and shelter, while conserving and protecting the environmental quality and the natural resource base essential for future development. The book also discusses engineering solutions to sustainable development and green design issues. Special emphasis is given on qualitative guidelines for generation, treatment, handling, transport, disposal and recycling of wastes. The book is intended as a practice-oriented reference guide for researchers and practitioners, and will be useful for all working in sustainable civil engineering related fields.
