Ghana has experienced a remarkable degradation and depletion of its forest resources over the last 100 years. This process has undermined the socio-economic and socio-cultural importance of the forests for millions of rural people who depend on the resource to support their livelihood. Many rural households have over the past three decades developed strategies to minimize the effects of forest depletion on their livelihood. The establishment of smallholder forest plantation on agricultural land has emerged as an important form of land-use for households to diversify their sources of income and also improve their socio-economic well-being. The main objective of the study was to identify and analyze the endogenous and exogenous factors inducing farm household's decision to establish farm forest plantation and to analyze its financial contribution to household's income and livelihood strategies. The study involved a survey of 280 randomly selected farm households from five communities in the Offinso district in Ghana. The multi-stage stratified random sampling technique was used to select as many as 165 households with farm forest plantation as well as 115 without farm forest plantation. A mixture of tools including semi-structured questionnaire, focus group discussions, wealth ranking, forest inventory and market surveys were used to collect the required data. Results from logistic regression analysis revealed that the age of the household head, the number of years of education of the household head, the amount of household labor, the size of household landholding, the ownership of permanent land, the availability of non-agricultural land and household's participation in past forest plantation development projects are the most important endogenous factors influencing the farm household's decision to establish farm forest plantation. In 2000, the leaders of member states of the United Nations adopted the Millennium Declaration, which set out a series of clear commitments, goals and targets to achieve Human Development. These ambitious goals were subsequently refined into eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), designed to provide a framework for accountability, donor coordination and resource mobilization. The MDGs are: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; achieve universal primary education; promote gender equality and empower women; reduce child mortality; improve maternal health; combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; ensure environmental sustainability; and develop a global partnership for development. The first seven of these Goals are concerned with outcomes, identifying the progress towards certain standards of human well-being and decent living which should be achieved globally and nationally by 2015. The eighth Goal is concerned with relationships, identifying various aspects of a “global partnership for development” which must be forged to support the realization of these poverty reduction, human development and environmental sustainability standards. The MDGs provide opportunities to start working from real-life development problems. Addressing these problems requires multidisciplinary approaches that combine the natural sciences, the life sciences and technical approaches with social-science approaches. The challenge is to integrate social, economic, political and institutional concerns into research strategy. To be able to achieve this, there is a need to establish a linking pin between research, policy and practice in Nigeria. The aim of such a linking pin would be to synthesize research outcomes on specific MDGrelated topics and to translate these into implications for policy – and decision – making through easily accessible gathering where individual stakeholders can air their views. Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, grade: 3.93, , course: forest economics and management, language: English, abstract: This study aims to examine the annual income contribution of wood fuel production from small - scale plantation forestry in Fagta Lekoma district of Amhara region, Ethiopia. Household surveys were conducted by following the snowball-sampling technique. The data analyzed by using STATA software and multiple linear regression model also employed to evaluate the contribution of wood fuel annual income from the total annual income of the households. About 9000 Ethiopian Birr (ETB) household income comes from charcoal selling which is the highest average annual income. The result of multiple linear regression analysis indicates that an increase in one unit (ETB) income from charcoal making leads to an increase in total annual income by 0.972 units (ETB). Annual income contribution of wood fuel production is the largest amount of income recorded followed by annual income from crop production. Plantation forestry plays a significant role not only economically but also by the provision of alternative livelihood options for households. Plantation forestry used as a means of soil reclamation as well as means of households’ income. Inaction and implementation of policies supporting plantation forestry sustain rural livelihood by increasing their adaptive potential for shock and stress by creating alternative means of livelihood.

For the last two decades the loss of, in particular, tropical rainforest has alarmed the public in the developed parts of the world. The debate has been characterised by a lack of understand ing of the causes and effects of the process, leading to the prevailing reaction being unquali fied condemnation. Such attitude has even been observed among scientists, claiming suprem acy to biodiversity conservation. Many scientific analyses are available, but the basis for so ber debates and appropriate actions is still highly insufficient. Two recent international initia tives! will hopefully lead to improved knowledge of deforestation and forest degradation as they recognise the need for studies to critically investigate those issues. This book will pro vide useful input to the initiatives. In my opinion, the scientific analyses have not sufficiently promoted the understanding that the fate of tropical forests is first and foremost a concern of the governments of the countries in which the forests are situated. Tropical forests may be important to the global environment and their rich biodiversity may be a human heritage. But their main importance is their poten tial contribution to improving livelihood in the countries in question.
