Book Description
Purpose: This study analyses the existing literature on continuous improvement (CI) initiatives and dynamic capabilities (DCs) development to answer the question whether CI initiatives foster development of DCs in organizations.Design/methodology/approach: We performed a systematic literature review (SLR), following several steps. After an exhaustive search of the main scholarly databases (EBSCOhost, Web of Knowledge, Scopus, ProQuest and Emerald Insight), we chose 19 studies and analysed them in depth.Findings: The results obtained identify issues such as a growing trend in the publication of studies, the dominant position of the US, and the predominance of empirical papers. We classified the literature according to whether it considers CI as a DC in itself, as an enabler of DC or as a result of the DC. We also identify the main critical success factors to be implemented in CI initiatives (CIIs) in order to enhance the development of DCs. Finally, based on the following and on analysis of the specific DCs literature, we include 10 theoretical propositions for possible future research.Originality/value: CIIs such as Lean Management, Six Sigma and Total Quality Management have been widely implemented in organizations. Despite their reputation, the effects of these initiatives on long-term benefits are fraught with controversy, which motivates our SLR of CIIs and DCs. DCs theory tackles the question of how firms can sustain their advantage and profits in the long term, making this perspective ideal for tackling controversy on the benefits of CIIs.

Book Description
Abstract: The main objective of this dissertation is to study the role of continuous improvement as a mechanism to build dynamic capabilities. Through three related essays we address how continuous improvement projects are related to performance. The first essay illustrates a configuration research method, qualitative comparative analysis (QCA). Based on its descriptions in the literature, QCA appears to be an appropriate method for examining multiple paths to performance using set theory. The main benefit of QCA in contrast to traditional statistical methods is the assumption of complex causality and nonlinear relationships.

Book Description
Creating, adapting to, and exploiting change is inherently entrepreneurial. To survive and prosper under conditions of change, firms must develop the “dynamic capabilities” to create, extend, and modify the ways in which they operate. The capacity of an organization to create, extend, or modify its resource base is vital. Since the concept of dynamic capabilities was first introduced, much research has elaborated the initial idea. This important book by Constance Helfat and her team of leading scholars provides a timely focus on in-depth examples of corporate dynamic capabilities. Examining these in the different contexts of alliances, acquisitions, and management, the book gives students and researchers a succinct, up-to-date definition of dynamic capabilities and the strategic management theories around them.

Book Description
According to Transforming Health Care Scheduling and Access, long waits for treatment are a function of the disjointed manner in which most health systems have evolved to accommodate the needs and the desires of doctors and administrators, rather than those of patients. The result is a health care system that deploys its most valuable resource-highly trained personnel-inefficiently, leading to an unnecessary imbalance between the demand for appointments and the supply of open appointments. This study makes the case that by using the techniques of systems engineering, new approaches to management, and increased patient and family involvement, the current health care system can move forward to one with greater focus on the preferences of patients to provide convenient, efficient, and excellent health care without the need for costly investment. Transforming Health Care Scheduling and Access identifies best practices for making significant improvements in access and system-level change. This report makes recommendations for principles and practices to improve access by promoting efficient scheduling. This study will be a valuable resource for practitioners to progress toward a more patient-focused "How can we help you today?" culture.
