Book Description
An analysis of the parameters concerning a proposed electrostatic wind tunnel for simulation of high velocities and high altitudes was undertaken. This hypersonic wind tunnel would provide a non-thermal means for simulating hypersonic flow in which the fluid is accelerated by the application of an electric field. Some of the problems involved with the concept, the development of the wind tunnel, and the possible limitations of the system are discussed. Requirements for the simulation of velocities between 10 to the 2nd power and 10 to the 4th power m/sec at altitudes from 50 to 160 km are identified. Analysis of the proposed electrostatic wind tunnel suggests a lower limit for altitude simulation in the range 75-100 km for velocities between 10 to the 3rd power and 10 to the 4th power m/sec. Many problems are associated with the electrostatic wind tunnel concept which must be investigated and solved before feasibility may be established. Development of an operational facility using the concept proposed would greatly enhance atmospheric re-entry studies, as well as suborbital vehicle research. (Author).
