D. 1441 By Thomas À Kempis These pause (or punctuation) marks have been faithfully reproduced in Dr. Hirsche's printed text; but it has of course been out of my power to make use of them in my condensed quotations; neither have I always been able to indicate the numerous instances of assonance or rhyme which abound at the conclusion of the verses, a list of which is printed by Dr. Hirsche on pp. 375 - 376 of his edition. The discovery of Thomas' system of pause-indications led Dr. Hirsche to adopt a still further improvement in his printed text, namely the breaking up Of every chapter into verses, each of which is closed by a punctuation mark, however brief or lengthy the verse may be.1 These verses Dr. Hirsche has numbered for each chapter, and I am thus enabled precisely to localise every reference in the Concordance. For the benefit of those to whom Dr. Hirsche's volume is not accessible, I have drawn up a table (see p. Xii), showing the number of lines contained in each chapter. By means of this the student may approximately estimate in any edition the relative position in the chapter of the passage referred to in the Concordance.
