An experimental and theoretical investigation was conducted to determine the degree of jet boundary simulation obtainable for underexpanded jets exhausting into a quiescent atmosphere. Tests were conducted with nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and helium gases, and theoretical boundaries were obtained by a method-of-characteristics solution. It was determined that the method-of-characteristics solution accurately represents the experimental jet boundaries and that the matching of simulation parameters gives good boundary simulation for a wide range of jet conditions. Also a rapid, simple method for estimating jet boundary shape is developed from the method-of-characteristics results. (Author).
