Comparer les comparables ? Comparer les comparatismes ? Pourquoi et comment comparer ? La première interrogation a été formulée par E. Lévinas dans le questionnement sur les relations avec autrui ; elle a été transférée récemment dans le domaine de l’anthropologie culturelle, et plus particulièrement dans celui de l’histoire des religions. Les doutes entretenus par les grandes entreprises comparatistes, de J.G. Frazer à Cl. Lévi-Strauss en passant par M. Eliade ou G. Dumézil, ont suscité la seconde, plus récemment encore. Quant à la troisième elle est l’objet, pour les religions antiques, des contributions réunies dans le présent volume, dans des tentatives devenues désormais plus modestes et plus expérimentales. En effet, pour l’Antiquité, les principes de l’analyse structurale dans l’anthropologie culturelle et sociale des années 1960 ont conduit soit au paradigme indo-européen des trois fonctions, soit à un renouveau du paradigme sémitique : approche moins diachronique que synchronique dans le premier cas ; fréquente perspective historique de dérivation dans le second. Déconstructionisme et relativisme postmoderniste ont contribué à déstabiliser la belle assurance des oppositions et schémas structuraux. Ils ont montré les risques d’un universalisme et d’un essentialisme naturalisants. Désormais, la démarche comparative est revenue à des pratiques moins ambitieuses, soit sur le mode du questionnement et de l’expérimentation autour d’un problème, soit sur le mode de la comparaison différentielle à la recherche de spécificités définies par contraste, soit encore sur le mode dialogique et réflexif qui est aussi devenu celui de l’anthropologie culturelle et sociale. À l’exemple des phénomènes que nous plaçons sous l’étiquette de la religion, comment réhabiliter une démarche comparative à la fois rigoureuse et critique ? Questionnements donc, à partir d’exemples précis, sur les modèles d’intelligibilité dont nous nous inspirons, dans la dialectique parfois conflictuelle entre catégories « émiques » et catégories « étiques », pour refonder une analyse comparative productive, en histoire des religions en particulier et en sciences humaines en général.

Historically, all societies have used comparison to analyze cultural difference through the interaction of religion, power, and translation. When comparison is a self-reflective practice, it can be seen as a form of comparatism. Many scholars are concerned in one way or another with the practice and methods of comparison, and the need for a cognitively robust relativism is an integral part of a mature historical self-placement. This volume looks at how different theories and practices of writing and interpretation have developed at different times in different cultures and reconsiders the specificities of modern comparative approaches within a variety of comparative moments. Paul and the Greco-Roman Philosophical Tradition provides a fresh examination of the relationship of Greco-Roman philosophy to Pauline Christianity. In Building the Body of Christ, Daniel C. Cochran argues that monumental Christian art and architecture played a crucial role in the formation of individual and communal identities in late antique Italy. The ecclesiastical buildings and artistic programs that emerged during the fourth and fifth centuries not only reflected Christianity’s changing status within the Roman Empire but also actively shaped those who used them. Emphasizing the importance of materiality and the body in early Christian thought and practice, Cochran shows how bishops and their supporters employed the visual arts to present a Christian identity rooted in the sacred past but expressed in the present through church unity and episcopal authority. He weaves together archaeological and textual evidence to contextualize case studies from Rome, Aquileia, and Ravenna, showing how these sites responded to the diversity of early Christianity as expressed through private rituals and the imperial appropriation of the saints. Cochran shows how these early ecclesiastical buildings and artistic programs worked in conjunction with the liturgy to persuade individuals to adopt alternative beliefs, practices, and values that contributed to the formation of institutional Christianity and the “Christianization” of late antique Italy.

Yet far from being a diabolical monster, he insisted, he was one of the “hounds of God,” fierce guardians who battled sorcerers, witches, and even Satan to protect the fields, flocks, and humanity—a baffling claim that attracted the notice of the judges then and still commands attention from historians today. It argues that the character of Greek divination differed fundamentally from that of the two comparanda. Ample attention is given to background and method at first. Subsequent chapters discuss the divinatory elements – sign, homo divinans, and text, relating divination to time and uncertainty. This book brings together sources originating from various times and places, questioning these to consider both generalities of ancient divination and specifics of Greek divination. Greek divination was inherently flexible on many levels: these findings should be connected to Greek views on time and the future as well as the relatively low level of divinatory institutionalization.

In Creation and Contemplation, Julien Decharneux explores the connections between the cosmology of the Qur’ān and various cosmological traditions of Late Antiquity, with a focus on Syriac Christianity. The first part of the book studies how, in exhorting its audience to contemplate the world, the Qur’ān carries on a tradition of natural contemplation that had developed throughout Late Antiquity in the Christian world. In this regard, the analysis suggests particularly striking connections with the mystical and ascetic literature of the Church of the East, which was in effervescence at the time of the emergence of Islam. The second part argues that the Qur’ānic cosmological discourse is built so as to serve the overarching theological message of the text, namely God’s absolute unity. Despite the allusive, and sometimes obscure, way in which the Qur’ān talks about the world’s coming into being and its maintenance in existence, the text betrays its authors’ acquaintance with cosmological debates of Late Antiquity. In studying the Qur’ān through the prism of Late Antiquity, this book contributes to our understanding of the emergence of Islam and its relationship with other religious traditions of the time.
