Comparative Physiology and Evolution of the Autonomic Nervous System
Author: Charlotte B. Nilsson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 135145949X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 466
Book Description
Comparative Physiology and Evolution of the Autonomic Nervous System, the fourth volume in the Autonomic Nervous System series, is an up-to-date account of the comparative physiology and functional anatomy of the autonomic nervous system, with an emphasis on non-mammalian vertebrates. The book starts with an overview of the field and then discusses both 'classical' (adrenergic and cholinergic) non-adrenergic and non-cholinergic (NANC) types of neurotransmission. The account is then further developed by an examination of the autonomic nervous control of specific systems and organs. Readership: Researchers, working professionals, undergraduates and graduates working in neurology, cardiology, internal medicine, clinical pharmacology, and hypertension.

Autonomic Nerve Function in the Vertebrates
Author: S. Nilsson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642819745
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 267
Book Description
The intention of this book is to offer a comprehensive description and discussion of autonomic nerve function in the vertebrates from several points of view. Sections on anatomy, biochemistry of the transmitter substances and the structure, physiology and pharmacology of the different types of autonomic neurons have been included, together with chapters dealing with the autonomic nervous control of some organs and organ systems in the different vertebrate groups. Although knowledge in several of these areas is based primarily on studies of mammals, a certain emphasis has been placed on the autonomic nerve functions in the non-mammalian vertebrates to describe, from a comparative physiological point of view, the adaptations and possible "phylogenetic trends" in the development of the autonomic nerve functions in the vertebrates. It is very obvious that the literature created by the vigorous research activities within the fields of autonomic nervous anatomy, histochemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology and physiology is vast indeed, and not all aspects of the subject may have received fair treatment in the present volume. With an analogy from astronomy, it is hoped that the mass compressed into this book has reached the level of an energy-emitting neutron star, rather than the black hole which would be the result of compressing too large a mass.

The Comparative Physiology of Regulatory Peptides
Author: Susanne Holmgren
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400908350
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 502
Book Description
Strictly speaking, the term regulatory peptides may include any peptide which has a regulatory function in any organism. In recent years, how ever, the term has come to mean those originally classified as brain-gut peptides. The peptides initially defined as those belonging to the brain gut axis had a dual location in neurones of the brain and endocrine cells of the gut. We now include a number of neuropeptides found in the autonomic nervous system of the gut, the cardiovascular system and other systems. To many scientists comparative physiology means comparison of the mechanisms of certain functions in the rat, the guinea-pig, the cat and maybe some other mammal. If the philosophy is that man is the centre of the universe and other mammals can be used as 'models' of man, this may well be the most useful way to study the functions of the human being, without actually chopping somebody up. However, with a some what wider perspective on life, it is easy to see the importance of a full understanding of the function of all living organisms, in its own right as well as a link in the evolution towards individuals able to survive and reproduce in very different environments. The importance of com parative studies in all living organisms cannot be emphasized too much. It has been the ambition with this book to treat all animals as equally important.

Central Nervous Control of Autonomic Function
Author: Barry Jordan
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9783718651412
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 326
Book Description
Each of nine contributions presents an overview of the nervous control of autonomic outflow to a particular organ or system, while maintaining an integrated approach to describing the simultaneous control of several outflows in response to different physiological situations. The authors describe a neurophysiological, neuropharmacological, and neuroanatomical approach to problems. Reference to relevant studies in humans, as well as animal work, is also provided. Advances in Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry V6
Author: O Lowenstein
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323158307
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 272
Book Description
Advances in Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry, Volume 6, presents three papers linked by their relevance to comparative neurophysiology. The first paper on high-frequency hearing in mammals examines the sensitivity to, production, and behavioral utilization of high-frequency sound for a wide range of mammals from bats, rodents, whales, dolphins, and seals to the insectivores, primates, edentates, and carnivores. The second paper examines axonal flow and fast transport in nerves. Special attention is given to the differences in substrate and mechanism in slow and fast transport. The neuron is presented as a suitable cell type for the investigation of intracellular transport in general. The third paper on the secretory activity of neurons and related electrical activity presents a comparative assessment of all ""neurocrine"" activities, including those in the service of neuroendocrine coordination or of synaptic transmission of information. Special attention is given to the nature of vesicles containing the neurosecretions and transmitter substances and to the mechanisms of release. The electrical events accompanying such neurocrine activities are discussed.
