Book Description
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1882 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER X. ODDS AND ENDS. 149. Odds and Ends.--The scope of the foregoing chapters has compelled us to leave unmentioned certain matters relating to clothing that have, nevertheless, a considerable importance. And the size of this volume does not permit us to add further chapters. We have, therefore, assembled here certain odds and ends of information or advice for clothing under special circumstances, as bed-clothes, the laying-by of clothes for winter and summer, and other details. They have no more connection one with the other than odds and ends usually have. Our idea is that they may have some connection with the various and varied wants of our readers. 150. Bed-clothing.--Too little attention is paid to bed-clothing. One-third of life is, or should be, spent in bed, and if the immediate surroundings of the body influence health during the day, they are likely to exercise greater, rather than less, influence during the night. For at no other time are we unconscious, unable to rectify anything that may be wrong, and at no other time do we pass so many consecutive hours in the same place, under the same conditions. Bed-clothing should be warm but light, and should not retain the perspiration. Many of the more expensive kinds of white cotton counterpanes, so much in use, have the reverse of these qualities; and it is a good plan to turn them back from the bed and to replace them by blankets or quilts. For an invalid or bedridden person they should never be used. Some folks accustom themselves to sleep under heavy clothing. Anecdotes are related of travellers who are unable to sleep under a French duvet unless weighted by the superposition of an open portmanteau, and of agricultural poor who, in default of warmer covering, place a...

Book Description
Common Sense by Thomas Paine Fight for Freedom! Thomas Paine's pamphlet was first written and distributed in 1775, and read aloud in meeting places and taverns. Calling the American Colonists to fight for their own representative government, this text made an impassioned plea for independence. Common Sense was an immediate sensation in Philadelphia and across the thirteen colonies. With clear and reasoned style, Paine was the first to advocate for war on the behalf of an idea--launching the American project and distinct American political identity. Thomas Paine's Common Sense maintains its readability and passion for Americans today.

Book Description
A darkly satirical novel of love, revenge, and 1950s haute couture—now a major motion picture starring Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth, and Hugo Weaving After twenty years spent mastering the art of dressmaking at couture houses in Paris, Tilly Dunnage returns to the small Australian town she was banished from as a child. She plans only to check on her ailing mother and leave. But Tilly decides to stay, and though she is still an outcast, her lush, exquisite dresses prove irresistible to the prim women of Dungatar. Through her fashion business, her friendship with Sergeant Farrat—the town’s only policeman, who harbors an unusual passion for fabrics—and a budding romance with Teddy, the local football star whose family is almost as reviled as hers, she finds a measure of grudging acceptance. But as her dresses begin to arouse competition and envy in town, causing old resentments to surface, it becomes clear that Tilly’s mind is set on a darker design: exacting revenge on those who wronged her, in the most spectacular fashion.

Book Description
Award-winning author Philip K. Howard lays out the blueprint for a new American society. In this brief and powerful book, Philip K. Howard attacks the failed ideologies of both parties and proposes a radical simplification of government to re-empower Americans in their daily choices. Nothing will make sense until people are free to roll up their sleeves and make things work. The first steps are to abandon the philosophy of correctness and our devotion to mindless compliance. Americans are a practical people. They want government to be practical. Washington can’t do anything practically. Worse, its bureaucracy prevents Americans from doing what’s sensible. Conservative bluster won’t fix this problem. Liberal hand-wringing won’t work either. Frustrated voters reach for extremist leaders, but they too get bogged down in the bureaucracy that has accumulated over the past century. Howard shows how America can push the reset button and create simpler frameworks focused on public goals where officials—prepare for the shock—are actually accountable for getting the job done.
