Chosen as a BBC History Magazine Book of the Year 2021 and shortlisted for the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize 2022 In the wedded stories of migration and the end of empire, Ian Sanjay Patel uncovers a forgotten history of post-war Britain. After the Second World War, what did it mean to be a citizen of the British empire and the post-war Commonwealth of Nations? Post-war migrants coming to Britain were soon renamed immigrants in laws that prevented their entry despite their British nationality. The experiences of migrants and the archival testimony of officials and politicians at home and abroad, retold here, define Britain’s role in the global age of decolonization.

Discrimination Against Coloured Immigrants in the British Housing Sector in the 1960s
Author: Wolfgang Gaßner
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3640239954
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 15
Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,0, University of Regensburg, course: Black Britain, language: English, abstract: The place you live in, where your accommodation is set, is a determinant factor for the integration of coloured people in the society today and was one in the 1960s. It does not only determine the education of the children and the employment of the adolescent1, but the surrounding also has a deep impact on the social development. Therefore it is easier for coloured immigrants to be integrated into British society, when they are living in a rather middle-class area than in a run-down ‘immigration quarter’. Wole Soyinka’s poem “Telephone Conversation” describes the attempt of a coloured man to break out of the normally poor housing situation of blacks, but instead of getting a fair chance to improve his living conditions, he is only discriminated against. This paper will first have a close look on the poem and afterwards examine the reasons of discrimination in the housing sector and how they worked in the daily search for a better accommodation.

Coloured Minorities in Britain
Author: Sydney Collins
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 268
Book Description
Minorities--Great Britain--Race relationsIn 1957, Sydney Collins's academic study of 'Moslems, Negroes and Chinese' communities in Tyneside, Wales and Lancashire was published as 'Coloured Minorities in Britain'. The research is notable not only for being one of the first to focus on Muslim as well as black groups in early post-Second World War Britain, but also due to the balanced, even sympathetic approach Collins took to the many mixed race couples and families he came across during his study.
