With some states now allowing their colleges and universities to have concealed weapons on campus, the purpose of this study was to determine how undergraduate students felt about the possibility of concealed-carry becoming a part of their lives. While this research assessed student attitudes about gun ownership, it also explored how their personality and demographic characteristics related to whether they supported having guns on their campus. This study utilized a cross-sectional survey research design that comprised 428 undergraduate students from several large classroom sections at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) in New Britain, Connecticut. The research found that while CCSU students supported Americans in their right to own guns they did not support the right of their fellow students in being able to have concealed-carry on their own campus, regardless of whether they had a gun permit. In this situation, CCSU students were skeptical of gun use being able to protect people from crime and also felt guns were possibly used to stimulate crimes, particularly when people are angry or drinking heavily. This research supports other studies of student attitudes about guns on campus, however, more research on concealed-carry needs to be conducted to determine the effects of concealed-carry on other college campuses.

Since the massacre at Virginia Tech, there has been much attention regarding the idea of students carrying guns on campus. The purpose of this paper is to determine the opinions of graduate and undergraduate students who attend the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) regarding policies for carrying guns on campus while differentiating between criminal justice and non-criminal justice majors. The researcher conducted a survey with the target population being students who attend classes on the UTA campus. Students were asked to specify their level of studies (graduate or undergraduate), and their major of studies and provide their opinion as to whether or not students should be allowed to carry guns on campus with the proper license. The major conclusion to be drawn from this research is that college students' attitudes towards carrying handguns did not indicate a feeling of strong agreement or disagreement. The results reveal that both undergraduate and graduate; CRCJ majors and other majors did not indicate any significant difference in perceptions and attitudes of carrying handguns on campus. Both CRCJ majors and non-CRCJ majors leaned towards disagreeing with the idea of carrying handguns on campus, however they were not statistically significant.

The number of mass shootings and active shooter situations has significantly increased at higher education institutions (HEIs) over the past several years, and as a result, they have introduced issues of safety that administrators must handle. The purpose of this embedded, single case study was to understand the attitudes concerning concealed carry on campus for students, staff, and faculty at Liberty University. The primary theory guiding this study was vested interest theory (Crano, 1997) as it examines the attitudes of those most closely involved with a situation and how they become vested in a particular situation which results in behavior changes, and the secondary theory is Maslow’s (1970) hierarchy of needs, as it argues that in order for individuals to achieve their potential, they must first have their safety needs met. Data collection entailed a survey sent to all students, staff, and faculty followed by interviews with select participants. Data analysis included the coding of the data to examine themes across the embedded units and provide descriptions of the attitudes and perceptions of faculty, staff, and students across the university. The research questions guiding this study were: (1) How do students, staff, and faculty feel about concealed carry on campus? (2) What factors influence the attitudes of faculty, staff, and students towards concealed carry on campus? (3) What affects does a concealed carry policy have on student, staff, and faculty perceptions of safety? (4) What impact does the university’s culture have on student, staff, and faculty attitudes towards concealed carry? (5) How do the students, staff, and faculty perceive the exposure given them concerning concealed carry on campus? Three overarching themes were identified: education and training, cognitive and emotional maturity, and mental health.

This study examined college students' perceptions of the right-to-carry guns on college campuses. With gun control being one of the most widely contested topics in both media and society, understanding how various cohorts perceive firearms is imperative in order to reach a common ground. The researchers conducted surveys at four different universities in the United States; Illinois State, Sam Houston, South Carolina, and South Florida. The questions were designed to measure students' interpretation of the Second Amendment, how they perceive firearms, and whether they feel firearms should be permitted on campus. The results showed that those who tend to be more favorable towards the Second Amendment and right to carry on campus are males who are criminal justice majors and go to university in the South. The results also showed that those who grew up in a household with firearms, and those who receive their gun control news from personal research are also more favorable towards campus carry and the right to bear arms.
