Book Description
Excerpt from Collections of the Connecticut Historical Society, Vol. 40 This Society published in 1892 and 1896, as volumes IV and V of its series of Collections, the correspondence and documents covering the period of Joseph Talcott's governorship of Connecticut, from his being first chosen in October 1724, to his death in office in October 1741. This volume, with the others of the Law Papers which are to follow it, contains the correspondence and documents covering the period of the governorship of Jonathan Law, who upon the death of Governor Talcott succeeded to the office of Governor of the colony of Connecticut, and who was continued in the office until his own death in November 1750. The originals of the greater part of the letters and documents here printed are in the archives of this Society; some are among the Connecticut State Archives preserved in the State Library; a number are among the Belknap and the Trumbull Papers preserved by the Massachusetts Historical Society, and a few are among the Chalmers Papers preserved in the New York Public Library (Lenox foundation). Such of the manuscripts as are in this Society's archives are, with a few exceptions, contained in the series of five folio volumes lettered "J. Law Papers." Some forty or more years ago these manuscripts were arranged in a roughly chronological order, and mounted upon stubs ready for binding. Book Description
Excerpt from Collections of the Connecticut Historical Society, Vol. 8 The State of Connecticut issued in 1889 through the Adjutant General's office the splendid volume edited by Prof. Henry P. Johnston, entitled Record of Service of Connecticut Men in the War of the Revolution. Later investigations have brought to light new rolls and additional information not contained in that volume. It is these new rolls which are here printed to serve as a supplement to the volume issued by the State. This volume of Rolls and Lists is published under the pro visions of a recent special Act of the General Assembly making an annual appropriation of one thousand dollars to the Connecticut Historical Society; one of the purposes specifically named in this act being to publish its rolls of soldiers in the revolutionary and colonial wars, not heretofore printed. Another provision is that the Society shall deposit in the State Library three hundred copies of each catalogue, report, or other work published under this act, to be disposed of by the State Librarian. This is the third publication issued under the provisions of this act, and the first important work so issued.
