Book Description
Excerpt from Collections of the Connecticut Historical Society, Vol. 24 George E. Hoadley in his early life followed mercantile pursuits. His later years were devoted to the home and to historical and antiquarian studies. He became a member of the Connecticut Historical Society on February 5, 1901, and later was elected a member for life. He had an exceeding fondness for the numerous and varied literary and antiquarian treasures that had been gathered by both his brother Charles and himself, and took great pleasure in exhibiting and explain ing these to his friends in the new home which he erected in his later life in West Hartford near the Hartford boundary line. There he passed away quietly surrounded by his treasures on November 21, 1922, in his eighty-sixth year. Neither of the brothers married. By the will Of Mr. George E. Hoadley, and by a further memorandum accompanying it, many Of his manuscript treasures became the property of the Connecticut Historical Society, thus adding to some which he had presented to the Society during his life. His will also made the Society the legatee of one-half of the residuary estate remaining after a number Of personal bequests. This considerable residuary legacy, together with a gift made during his life time, were for the specific purpose Of procuring a site if necessary and of erecting a fire proof building for the use and occupancy of this Society. These funds were invested in high-class securi ties when they were received, and with the addition of their increment and the rise in the values of stocks they increased rapidly. However, before the Society had arranged for the erection Of a building there came the sudden and violent drop in the values of securities, which has postponed for the present the erection Of the contemplated building, although the site for it has been secured. Book Description
Excerpt from Collections of the Connecticut Historical Society, Vol. 14 The English settlement of Hartford, Conn., was made by settlers from "the New Towne," now Cambridge, Mass. As early as 1633 the region was visited by a few adventurers and traders from the Bay. In 1635 a settlement was begun at "Newtowne," the name being changed to Hartford two years later. The great exodus hither was in the spring of 1636, when the settlement was firmly established by the coming of the. Rev. Thomas Hooker and his party. About that time the lands were purchased by the settlers from the Indians. A confirmatory deed given in 1670, the original deed having been lost, states that it was given to "Mr. Samuel Stone and Mr. William Goodwin, in the behalf of the present proprietors and owners of the lands belonging to the township of Hartford." The proportional ownership of these lands, as stated at a meeting of the Proprietors in February 1671/2, was "according to the rate for diffusion of lands agreed upon entered In the Town book dated 3 Jan 1639" [i.e. 1639/40], "according to which proportion they payed for the purchase of the Sayd lands." The proportions of these Proprietors varied from one hundred sixty acres for John Haynes down to six for William Pratt and others. In addition to these were a number of settlers who were "Granted lotts to have onely at The Townes Courtesie," sometimes spoken of as proprietors by courtesy, whose proportions were from six to three acres each. The township was divided into two parts by the "riveret" which flowed eastward and emptied into the Connecticut river.
