Book Description
The Canadian Vehicle Survey (CVS), which began in 1999, is designed to collect information about the usage of motor vehicles registered in Canada. The CVS target population includes all on-road vehicles (except special equipment, trailers and motorcycles) registered in Canada. A sample of vehicles is drawn each quarter and a seven-day trip log is used to gather detailed usage patterns. The log includes questions on kilometres driven, number of passengers, vehicle characteristics, trip purpose and times, driver and passenger demographics and fuel usage. Because this is a voluntary survey and the log takes seven days to complete, every effort is made to ensure a good response rate and prevent response errors. The first part describes the current survey design, data collection, and editing and imputation methodology. Then the challenges associated with the different steps of the survey are explained. Finally, findings from a research carried out to minimize effects of non-sampling errors are presented.

Book Description
This book takes a look at fully automated, autonomous vehicles and discusses many open questions: How can autonomous vehicles be integrated into the current transportation system with diverse users and human drivers? Where do automated vehicles fall under current legal frameworks? What risks are associated with automation and how will society respond to these risks? How will the marketplace react to automated vehicles and what changes may be necessary for companies? Experts from Germany and the United States define key societal, engineering, and mobility issues related to the automation of vehicles. They discuss the decisions programmers of automated vehicles must make to enable vehicles to perceive their environment, interact with other road users, and choose actions that may have ethical consequences. The authors further identify expectations and concerns that will form the basis for individual and societal acceptance of autonomous driving. While the safety benefits of such vehicles are tremendous, the authors demonstrate that these benefits will only be achieved if vehicles have an appropriate safety concept at the heart of their design. Realizing the potential of automated vehicles to reorganize traffic and transform mobility of people and goods requires similar care in the design of vehicles and networks. By covering all of these topics, the book aims to provide a current, comprehensive, and scientifically sound treatment of the emerging field of “autonomous driving".

Book Description
This practical new book presents the application of “big data” analytics to connected vehicles, smart cities, and transportation systems. This book enables transportation professionals to understand how data analytics can and will expand the design and engineering of connected vehicles and smart cities. Readers find extensive case studies and examples that provide a strong framework focusing on practical application of data sciences and analytic tools for actual projects in the field. Both federal and private sector investments have a strong interest in the connected vehicle and this book discusses the impact this has on transportation. This book defines urban analytics and modeling, incentives and governance, mobility networks, energy networks, and other attributes and elements that craft a smart city. Readers learn how smart cities impact the application of advanced technologies in urban areas. This book explains how recently passed transportation legislation for the US has a specific emphasis on the use of data for performance management.

Book Description
A nice night of October 2007, in Beijing, during the XV World Conference on ITS a number of colleagues met informally for a dinner party that spontaneously became a vivid discussion on the importance of traffic data for all types of p- poses. Researchers can hardly do any progress in modeling, developing, and te- ing theories without suitable data, and what practitioners can do in real life is limited not only by technology but also by the availability of the required data. Quite frequently, the data and not the technologies are what determine how far we can go. Any discussion about traffic data leads in a natural way to a discussion on the variety of traffic data sources, formats, levels of aggregation, accuracies, and so on. Consequently, we moved to talk on the initiative that Kuwahara had undertaken in his traffic laboratory at the University of Tokyo, known as the International Traffic Data Base, and thus smoothly but inexorably we came to agree that it would be convenient to organize a workshop to continue our discussion at a more formal level, share our points of view with other colleagues, listen what they had to say and, if possible, d- seminate the findings in our professional and academic communities.
