Book Description
'Rimbaud, the poet of revolt, and the greatest' Albert Camus Rimbaud is the enfant terrible of French literature, the precocious genius whose extraordinary poetry is revolutionary in its visionary, hallucinatory content and its often liberated forms. He wrote all his poems between the ages of about 15 and 21, after which he turned his back on family, friends, and France to roam the world. In his final years he was a trader in the Horn of Africa. Out of the brief, colourful life and the poetry of sensory wildness has been created the myth of Rimbaud, an enduring icon of youth, rebellion, and freedom. But behind the myth lies a poetic adventure of high ambition and painful rigour, poignant yet heroic. Rimbaud is one of the greatest French poets of all times. This bilingual edition provides all of Rimbaud's poems, with the exception of his Latin verses and some small fragments. It also includes some of his prose pieces, chosen because they offer a commentary on his poetic concerns.

Book Description
Leopold Sedar Senghor was not only president of the Republic of Senegal from 1960 to 1981, he is also Africa's most famous poet. A cofounder of the Negritude cultural movement, he is recognized as one of the most significant figures in African literature. This bilingual edition of Senghor's complete poems made his work available for the first time to English-speaking audiences. His poetry, alive with sensual imagery, contrasts the lushness and wonder of Africa's past with the alienation and loss associated with assimilation into European culture. Translator Melvin Dixon places Senghor's writing in historical persepctive by relating it to both his political involvement and his intellectual development.

Book Description
Jean Tardieu's poetry has an almost child-like simplicity, and in France his work is studied both in universities and in primary schools. Yet while he is a household name in France and has been translated into most European languages, his poetry remains little known in the English-speaking world, despite its immediacy and sense of fun. Tardieu is a writer of enormous range, and his poetry addresses problems of experience and language central to modern literature, bringing lively wit and humour to bear upon an anguished interrogation of the world. His father was a successful painter and his mother an accomplished musician, and his fascination with the art of the writer on the one hand, and paintings and music on the other, is another constant presence in his work. Tardieu was born in 1903, and this selection spans 80 years of his writing. In his early years the difficulties of writing lyric poetry in a schizophrenic age led him to a multiplication of poetic voices, and so to working for the stage, and he was writing what was subsequently dubbed Theatre of the Absurd before Beckett's and Ionesco's plays had ever been performed in public. He died in 1995. This selection includes the sequence Space and the Flute (1958), which Tardieu wrote for drawings by his friend Pablo Picasso. Their poems and drawings are reproduced together in this edition.

Book Description
In 1908 a small volume of poetry was published in Paris by an unknown author named A. O. Barnabooth-who in fact did not exist. Only after the book received favorable reviews by major French writers and critics did its real author, Valery Larbaud, step forward to claim Barnabooth as his alter ego. The revised and expanded 1913 edition of the book, with Larbaud credited as its author, has become a classic, eventually being included in the esteemed Pleiade series of books devoted to great French writers and has remained in print in France for almost 100 years now. In The Poems of A. O. Barnabooth Larbaud expresses an ambivalent yearning for exotic places where one might be exalted by both the sadness and the beauty of life. He is fascinated by otherness. But, as Rimbaud put it, I is another. Larbaud/Barnabooth says, I always write with a mask upon my face. but sometimes this mask dissolves. Larbaud's modulation between cynical despair and the simple pleasures of everyday life bare the mercurial heart of a young poet fascinated by the mystery of identity, making The Poems of A. O. Barnabooth the marvelous and modern book that it is. This current bilingual edition, translated by the poets Ron Padgett and Bill Zavatsky, includes an introduction, additional poems by Larbaud, period post card illustrations, and detailed notes for all the poems.
