Book Description
The coherence properties of a pulsed ruby, multi-mode laser were determined by recording the time-averaged effect of the radiation field on photographic emulsion. The recorded relative intensity distributions were analyzed and compared with a theoretical, single mode prediction. The laser beam was expanded to a one-inch diameter beam. Then, with the aid of a Twyman-Green interferometer, a temporal coherence length of approximately 1.27 centimeters was observed. Also, for an aperture radius of 0.51 millimeters, in conjunction with a modified Youngs experiment, a spatial coherence length of approximately 2.2 millimeters was observed.

Book Description
Previous experiments have indicated an inversion dependent blue shift in the emission frequency of pulsed (non-Q-Switched) ruby lasers during the emission of a single pulse. The purpose of this work was to study the temporal coherence properties of single mode passively Q-Switched ruby laser emission by using a transient interference detection technique capable of better than 4 nsec resolution. The experiments were carried out using a Young's double pinhole interferometer to interfere the output of the laser with a portion of the same output delayed by a given time period. From the time dependence of the interference pattern phase, in combination with the simultaneously measured time dependence of laser power it was firmly established that an inversion dependent blue shift exists in the emission frequency of a single mode Q-Switched ruby laser. A number of physical mechanisms are discussed which could possibly account for a laser frequency shift. Experiments were also performed to determine the direction and magnitude of any existing frequency shifts in second harmonic emission (at 3472 A). (Author).

Book Description
A mode selected, cryptocyanine Q-switched ruby laser was designed, constructed, and operated. The degree of mode selectivity as a function of cryptocyanine loss was studied and an optimum loss was selected. Theoretical work was done to incorporate the cryptocyanine loss into a theory of passively Q-switched lasers. A transient interference experiment was redesigned for operation with a Q-spoiled laser. Data was obtained showing that the rate of change of the laser frequency during the Q-spoiled emission pulse is approximately twenty times the rate of change during a single spike of an ordinary ruby laser. This result tends to confirm a previously stated model for this frequency change which attributes it to direct atomic coupling to lattice strain. The ions are expected to act independently in causing the strain and hence the variation in cavity optical length is expected to be linear in the change in the number of excited states in the laser. Since the rate of change of population inversion during Q-spoiled emission is much larger than for normal lasing it was expected, prior to this work, that a greater rate of change of frequency should be observed. This has now been confirmed. (Author).

Book Description
High Speed Pulse Technology, Volume IV: Sparks and Laser Pulses covers the production and practical aspects of sparks and laser pulses for the generation and utilization of high speed pulsed of energy in different forms. This volume consists of seven chapters and begins with reviews of the classification of photographic methods of high-speed analysis, specifically the motion analysis of rapid events by white light pulses. The next chapters examine the sources of white pulse light and nanosecond radiation. The remaining chapters discuss the applications of the technology in photography, photolysis, laser pumping, and visualization of flows, cracks, and particles. This book will prove useful to physicists, electrical and other engineering fields, teachers, and students who are interested in sparks and laser pulses.
