"The purpose of this study was (1) to determine how a retarded population would be distributed on each of four cognitive style dimensions and (2) to determine if significant interrelationships existed among cognitive style ratings received by the same retarded subjects across the four dimensions under' investigation. Subjects selected for this study consisted of 32 mentally retarded and intellec- tually sub-average students enrolled in the Spokane Community College District 17 Adult Continuing Education Program. Twenty subjects were community-based (living in private homeS, apartments, and group homes) while 12 subjects were residing at a state institution for the mentally retarded. IQ scores from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) and MA scores from the Slosson Intelligence Test (SIT), administered within previous 12 months, were used to establish current intellectual levels for all subjects. The experimental design of this study was a "quasi" counterbalanced design developed to control for total sequence presentation with partial control for order representation. Subjects were administered the Matching Familar Figures Test (HFFT), Children's Embedded Figures Test (CEFT), Lemon Juice Salivation Test (LJST) and the Vertical Aspiration Board (VAB) in accordance with sequence deter-mined from the counterbalance design. Results from the present study indicated that a greater percentage of male subjects, than female subjects, were classified as field dependent (CEFT), reflective/slow-inaccurate (MFFT) and introvert (LJST) while all subjects (both male and female) were classified as external locus of control (VAB). Results from the present study indicated that a greater percentage of female subjects, than male subjects, were classified as field independent (CEFT), impulsive/fast-accurate (MFFT) and extravert (LJST). Among the various pairs of cognitive styles it was found that negative interrelationships did exist between field dependence/independence and NFFT error, field dependence/independence and introversion/extraversion, field dependence/independence and internal/external locus of control, MFFT error and introversion/extraversion, HFFT error and internal/external locus of cotnrol, and MFFT latency and internal/external locus of control; however, significance at the .05 level was only obtained between the cognitive styles of field dependence/independence and WFT error (Rho=-.37, p

"Zaborac (unpublished, 1979) examined the cpgnitive style characteristics of 36 adult retardates. The distributions and interrelationships of the cognitive style dimensions of field dependence/independence, as measured by the Children's Embedded Figures Test (CEFT), impulsiveness/reflectiveness, as measured by the 1atching Familiar Figures Test C:HFFT), introversion/extraversion, as measured by the Lemon Juice Salivation Test (LJST), and locus of control, as measured by the Vertical Aspiration Board (VAB), were analyzed. The retarded subjects were found to be significantly more extraverted when the amount of salivation was compared to norms established by Corcoran (1964), Casey and McManis (1971), and NcManis, McCarthy, and Koval (1978). Retarded subjects were also found to be significantly more externally controlled when shift scores were compared to baseline scores in terms of the subjects' baseline mean and standard deviation. A significant positive correlation was found between CEFT scores and MFFT latency scores as well as a significant negative correlation between CEFT scores and HFFT error scores. The present study was designed as an attempt to replicate the study by Zaborac (unpublished, 1979) using 16 adult retarded subjects. The CEFT was used to place subjects on the dimension of field dependence/independence; the MFFT was the measure used to place subjects on the dimension of impulsiveness/reflectiveness; the LJST was the measure used to assess introversion/extraversion; and the VAB was used to place subjects on the dimension of internality/externality. It was hypothesized that the retarded subjects would be significantly more extraverted, field dependent, impulsive, and externally controlled, and that significant correlations would exist between each of the cognitive style measures, as well as between each cognitive style measure and mental age (MA). Ten female retarded Ss and six retarded males, ranging in age from 20.5 years to 51 years and ranging in IQ 44-68, were given the CEFT, the MFFT, the LJST, the VAB, and the Slosson Intelligence Test, administered in a sequence determined by test and subject availability. Differences in the proportion of Ss classified as field dependent/independent, impulsive/reflective, introversion/extraverted, and internally/externally controlled, were analyzed by the Binomial probability distribution.
