Book Description
The coalescence of two colliding water drops was studied by determining the surface deformation of the half-drops before coalescence in a controlled atmosphere. The surface deformation and delay time before coalescence were determined at two impact velocities, at approximately zero, 50 and 97 percent relative humidity, and at an ambient temperature of approximately 27C. The experimental results indicate that the delay time before coalescence increases with higher humidities in both the slow and rapid collisions. At the same humidity and temperature the delay time is less in the slow collision than in the rapid collision. An electric potential difference between the drops decreases the delay time in coalescence and greatly affects the surface deformation. (Author).

Book Description
The report presents the first year results of a theoretical study which attempts to explain the phenomena of coalescence of drops. Even though the model represents a gross simplification of the real situation, it shows remarkable agreement with some of the experimental results which were recently published. At this stage the model investigates the effects of the viscous force between the interacting drops, but future work will include both the effects of the electrical double layer and the oscillation of the surfaces of the drops. Book Description
"Coalescence of raindrops and cloud droplets has been studied in collaboration with W. Hitschfeld, by allowing drops of 3 mm diameter to fall through a three metre column of cloud. The observed drop growth is expressed in terms of a collection efficiency, the fraction of the cloud water in the path of the drop, which is actually picked up. Collection efficiencies, using three clouds of different droplet-size distributions, are found to be in good agreement with aerodynamic collision efficiencies, calculated from a theory by Langmuir. His assumption that collision always leads to coalescence is thus confirmed." --
