Democratic Enterprise: Ethical business for the 21st century
Author: Diarmuid McDonnell
Publisher: Diarmuid McDonnell
ISBN: 0955534224
Category : Cooperative societies
Languages : en
Pages : 186
Book Description
The United Nations has declared 2012 to be the International Year of Co-operatives in recognition of the impact that co-operative enterprise has on more than three billion people across the globe. Co-operatives contribute to national and local economies in virtually every country by championing an ethical approach to business underpinned by internationally agreed values and principles. Yet despite the wide-ranging successes of co-operatives, in financial terms as well as in the development of sustainable communities, the study of these democratic forms of enterprise remains surprisingly absent from the curricula of most university business schools around the world. Designed primarily for undergraduate students, Democratic Enterprise provides an introductory-level analysis of democratic models of enterprise, namely co-operatives and employee-owned businesses. A supplement to any course that deals with these topics, it also stands alone as a template for academics who wish to incorporate material on democratic models of enterprise into courses relating to economics, business studies, sustainable development, enterprise, and organizational theory and behavior.

State-Administered Rural Change
Author: Björn Gyllström
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000868850
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 334
Book Description
Originally published in 1991, this book includes a detailed case study of Kenya’s co-operative movement – one of the largest in sub-Saharan Africa. Co-operatives have been given a major role in rural development strategies in both socialist and capitalist states. However in both context the results they have achieved have fallen short of expectations. The book focuses on specific elements of the institutional setting within which agricultural marketing co-operatives operate. Factors like land tenure, market regulations, co-operative legislation and direct development support are discussed and shown to have had dire effects on the managerial behaviour and social impact of the co-operative sector.

Co-operatives and Poverty Alleviation
Author: Jovin A. Banturaki
Publisher: Tema Publishers Company
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 190
Book Description
Before the co-operative disbandment in 1976 co-ops were recognised as rural development promoters and vehicles for rural transformation. However since the co-operative re-establishment in 1982 to the present time that previous identity has been greatly eroded due to operational setbacks, mismanagement, confusion, and misdirection. This book is the result of a study of twenty-four randomly selected primary co-op societies in four regions. Part one introduces the study giving background information on the research problem and question, and outlines the objectives and hypotheses, the research methodology, and the main features of the sample population. Part two deals with co-operative theory and the practice of co-operation. The research findings and accompanying analysis make up the third party and the majority of the study, while the fourth part discusses the studies results paying particular attention to cop-operative potential in rural development and the governments efforts towards the co-op revival. The fifth part concludes with recommendations on emerging policy implications and on the future of co-ops as instruments for poverty alleviation.
