Excerpt from Zoning Law of the City of Boston (Chapter 488 of the Acts of 1924), In Effect June 5, 1924, the City Planning Board Section I. For the purposes Of this act, certain words and terms used herein are hereinafter defined; words not defined herein shall be construed as defined or used in chapter five hundred and fifty of the acts of nineteen hundred and seven, and acts in amend ment thereof and in addition thereto, being the building law of the city of Boston, hereinafter referred to as the aforesaid building law or, if not defined or used therein, as in the regulations of the depart ment of public safety. Building, Area of: The maximum horizontal projected area of a building, including covered porches but excluding cornices not more than eighteen inches Wide, steps and terraces. Dwelling: Any house or building, or portion thereof, except a hotel, which is occupied in whole or in part as the home or resi dence of one or more persons, either permanently or transiently.
