In this volume, Mark Douglas presents an environmental history of the Christian just war tradition. We are engaged in a moral and in a spiritual warfare as well as in a material conflict. Let us consider what are the rival aspirations that have come into violent collision. We will commence with those of the Prussian military oligarchy, ideals which have been popularized by such men as General Fredrich von Bernhardi. General von Bernhardi's moral code is not original, it has been derived from another, and it is with this source of his ideals that we are primarily con cerned.
