Excerpt from Catholic Christianity and Modern Unbelief This work was suggested to me by a man of more than ordinary powers of observation and intelligence, who had travelled over every part of the United States, and through most of the British colonies. His was not superficial travelling; his duties led him to stay for weeks, and months, and even years, in some of the States, and in particular districts; and the same duties gave him an insight into the religious wants of the people he visited. He told me that a book which would treat, in a popular way, the religious theories now so fashionable outside the Catholic Church, and contrast them with orthodox teaching, would be welcome and useful to many.
