The chinook escapement to the Campbell and Quinsam Rivers in 1984 was estimated by using a simple carcass tagging method. Marked carcasses from the Quinsam hatchery were released on 2 occasions in each river and the proportion of these carcasses recovered in the dead pitch was used as an index of the effectiveness of the dead pitch. In this report, the theory behind the use of carcass tagging is examined and the expected levels of precision and the potentials for bias are assessed. Two different estimation methods are examined, one based on a Petersen approach and the other on the Schaefer method, and the need for corrections for differences in the sex ratio between live sampling and dead sampling is discussed.

The chinook salmon of the Campbell/Quinsam river system were selected as one of the indicator stocks for assessing the response of Pacific chinook salmon stocks to a new harvest management regime, begun in 1984, to build stocks to historical levels. This report presents the results from 1986-88 of intense escapement monitoring and sampling of chinook salmon, calculated using the adjusted Petersen method by tagging carcasses to produce separate estimates for sexes and rivers and summing these to form a total estimate for the in-river escapement of chinook. The total recovery of chinook salmon at the Quinsam Hatchery was then added to the in-river estimates to produce a final escapement figure for the entire system. Potential biases in the Petersen method, the carcass and live tagging approaches, and method of stratification are discussed. The results give population estimates and composition (age, length, and sex) and results of coded wire tagging studies.

The objective of this document is to provide Chinook salmon escapement estimates for the Campbell/Quinsam River system based upon the adjusted Petersen method of population estimation utilizing tagged and recovered carcasses. In combination with Petersen estimates, coded-wire tagged (CWT) adult returns are used to estimate total CWT and hatchery contribution to river escapements. In this study, escapement estimates were stratified by river, sex, age, and tag code. Hatchery contributions to strata were derived by expanding the actual number of coded wire tag returns for each brood year and each tag code.--Document.
