During the early modern period, Muslims in China began to embrace the Chinese characteristics of their heritage. Several scholar-teachers incorporated tenets from traditional Chinese education into their promotion of Islamic knowledge. As a result, some Sino-Muslims established an educational network which utilized an Islamic curriculum made up of Arabic, Persian, and Chinese works. The corpus of Chinese Islamic texts written in this system is collectively labeled the Han Kitab. Interpreting Islam in China explores the Sino-Islamic intellectual tradition through the works of some its brightest luminaries. Three prominent Sino-Muslim authors are used to illustrate transformations within this tradition, Wang Daiyu, Liu Zhi, and Ma Dexin. Kristian Petersen puts these scholars in dialogue and demonstrates the continuities and departures within this tradition. Through an analysis of their writings, he considers several questions: How malleable are religious categories and why are they variously interpreted across time? How do changing historical circumstances affect the interpretation of religious beliefs and practices? How do individuals navigate multiple sources of authority? How do practices inform belief? Overall, he shows that these authors presented an increasingly universalistic portrait of Islam through which Sino-Muslims were encouraged to participate within the global community of Muslims. The growing emphasis on performing the pilgrimage to Mecca, comprehensive knowledge of the Qur'an, and personal knowledge of Arabic stimulated communal engagement. Petersen demonstrates that the integration of Sino-Muslims within a growing global environment, where international travel and communication was increasingly possible, was accompanied by the rising self-awareness of a universally engaged Muslim community.

Chinese-Islamic studies have concentrated thus far on the arts of earlier periods with less attention paid to works from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). This book focuses on works of Chinese-Islamic art from the late seventeenth century to the present day and bring to the reader’s attention several new areas for consideration. The book examines glass wares which were probably made for a local Chinese-Muslim clientele, illustrating a fascinating mixture of traditional Chinese and Muslim craft traditions. While the inscriptions on them can be related directly to the mosque lamps of the Arab world, their form and style of decoration is characteristically that of Han Chinese. Several contemporary Chinese Muslim artists have succeeded in developing a unique fusion of calligraphic styles from both cultures. In the fall of 2006, the University of Maryland, along with various government and industrial sponsors, invited leading researchers from all over the world to a two-day Summit on Arabic and Chinese Handwriting Recognition (SACH 2006). The event acted as a complement to the biennial Symposium on Document Image Understanding Technology (SDIUT), providing a focused glimpse into the state of the art in Arabic and Chinese handwriting recognition. It offered a forum for interaction with prominent researchers at the forefront of the scientific community and provided an opportunity for participants to help explore possible directions of the field. This book is a result of the expansion, peer review, and revision of selected papers presented at this meeting. Handwriting recognition remains the Holy Grail of document analysis, and Arabic and Chinese scripts embrace many of the most significant challenges. We are pleased to have 16 scientific papers covering the original topics of handwritten Arabic and Chinese, as well as 2 papers covering other handwritten scripts. We asked each author to not only describe the techniques used in addressing the problem, but to attempt to identify the key research challenges and problems that the community faces. The result is an impressive collection of manuscripts that provide various detailed views of the state of research.
