Available Open Access under CC-BY-NC licence. Disasters are an increasingly common and complex combination of environmental, social and cultural factors. Yet existing response frameworks and emergency plans tend to homogenise affected populations as ‘victims’, overlooking the distinctive experience, capacities and skills of children and young people. Drawing on participatory research with more than 550 children internationally, this book argues for a radical transformation in children’s roles and voices in disasters. It shows practitioners, policy-makers and researchers how more child-centred disaster management, that recognises children’s capacity to enhance disaster resilience, actually benefits at-risk communities as a whole.

Book Description
Natural disasters have become more common in recent years, highlighting the importance of disaster risk management and mitigation. The degree of vulnerability of human groups who experience losses as a result of the disaster determines disaster risks. The development process has a considerable impact on catastrophe risk in most countries. Disaster recovery will be catastrophic for impoverished economies, so it is critical to design disaster management methods that include prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery on the one hand, and development activities on the other. Intergovernmental processes and partnerships are needed to meet 'Child Centric Disaster Risk Reduction online programme. Knowledge, evidence generation, and application are key aspects for building Development Resilient Infrastructure. Multi-stake holder's participation, Risk data and information, best evidence-based practices, policy guidance, tools, and capacity building can support in designing constructive intervention programmes to address the needs of all sections of the community affected by the disaster. Disaster risk can be best addressed if situation analysis for development-programme formulation considers age and gender-related needs. The three-day workshop organized by the Central University of Tamil Nadu in collaboration with National Institute of Disaster Management on “Online Training Programme on Child Centric Disaster Risk Reduction” was held from 28th to 30th March 2022 between 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The focus point of the training programme was on “Do's and Don'ts during COVID 19”, “Basic Concepts of Disaster Risk Management”, Disaster impact on children, “Psychological Understanding of Children in Disasters and Emergencies: A Theoretical Approach”, and “Home to home School safety”. The training sessions stressed the importance on the ability of the children to participate in the risk reduction activities, addressing the mental health issues of children and significance of organizing disaster management plans and mock drills in the schools.

Book Description
This book illustrates the main factors of vulnerability and gives a clear picture about the possible interventions to reduce disaster risks both in schools and communities in Azerbaijan. A new methodology for child centered vulnerability assessments both on school and community levels has been developed. This methodology can be used to assess the level of vulnerability of schools and communities. The book is a newly prepared training manual which will help practitioners conduct trainings for government and community organizations. While the book is focused on a specific region, the suggested approach is generic and can be used elsewhere.
