In the Chignik Management Area (Area L), the Chignik weir is the primary mode of enumeration for sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka into the Chignik River. Annually, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) samples salmon escapement at the Chignik weir for age, sex, and length (ASL) data. The biological information collected from salmon escapements provide the foundation for preseason run forecasts, escapement goal evaluation, and run reconstruction. Every week throughout the season, 240 sockeye salmon are sampled. Sockeye salmon scales are collected using established protocols common to the Westward Region.

The research is designed to assess age structure, fish body condition, and provide additional context for the adult sockeye salmon forecast. Age structure of the population will be estimated from scales of sockeye salmon smolt collected using a beach seine. Juvenile salmon habitat use will be examined by beach seining in near-shore marine environment. Findings from this project are vital for understanding effects of the commercial fishery and environmental changes occurring in the Chignik River system on the sockeye salmon population.

This operational plan outlines objectives, methods, and timelines for conducting sockeye salmon stock assessment designed to (1) estimate annual escapement, (2) provide information for inseason fishery management, and (3) reconstruct runs and assess stock status. The Chilkat Lake sockeye salmon run is managed for a biological escapement goal of 70,000–150,000 fish, which is enumerated with a Dual-Frequency Identification Sonar (DIDSON) system operated in conjunction with a standard picket weir located just downstream of the lake outlet. Genetic mixed stock analysis of weekly sockeye salmon harvests in the District 15 commercial drift gillnet fishery provides stock composition estimates that guide inseason management of the fishery (detailed in a separate Chilkoot Lake sockeye salmon operational plan). The goal of this study is to estimate Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) abundance at river mile (RM) 34 of the mainstem Susitna River and spawning distribution among 5 Susitna River drainage management areas in 2020. A 2-event mark–recapture experiment in combination with radio telemetry will be used. Fish wheels and gillnets will be operated at RM34 to capture Chinook salmon for marking with dart-PIT tags (a dart tag with an imbedded passive integrated transponder [PIT]) and radiotelemetry tags. Recapture event sampling will occur at the Deshka River weir at RM 7 where a PIT detection array will be used. Eight radiotracking stations will be strategically placed throughout the drainage to determine when radiotagged fish move in and out of the 5 management zones. A concurrent genetics mark–recapture study will be performed using genetic samples taken from a systematic sample of all dart-PIT-tagged fish. The applied radio tags will also be used to estimate handling effects. In the event of a sport fishery, harvest sampling of axillary processes and genetic stock identification will be used to determine the proportions of non-Deshka River Chinook salmon stocks taken in 2 sections of the Deshka River.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries, monitors annual escapements of salmon returning to the Situk River system near Yakutat, Alaska. A weir in the lower river provides the primary mode of enumeration for sockeye Oncorhynchus nerka and Chinook O. tshawytscha salmon escapements into the Situk River. Information provided by this project is used inseason to manage the Situk-Ahrnklin commercial set gillnet fishery to ensure escapement goals are met and to maximize and sustain the harvest of salmon from the Situk River. A two-person crew will enumerate all species of salmon through the Situk River weir and sample adult sockeye and Chinook salmon for biological characteristics (age, sex, and length). This report provides operational guidelines for the Situk River adult salmon weir project, including salmon enumeration, sampling procedures, and weir protocols.
