Book Description
This book deals with the astrophysics and spectroscopy of the interstellar molecules. In the introduction, overview and history of interstellar observations are described in order to help understanding how the modern astrophysics and molecular spectroscopy have been developed interactively. The recent progress in the study of this field is briefly summarized. Furthermore, the basic knowledge of molecular spectroscopy, which is essential to correctly comprehend the astrophysical observations, is presented in a compact form.

Book Description
The chemistry of the Interstellar Medium (ISM) is now known to be rich, highly complex, and highly heterogeneous. The identification of over 240 molecular species to date, several of them prebiotic in nature, has been driven entirely by first detecting and characterizing their spectra in the laboratory. Due to the structure specific nature of rotational spectroscopy, the bulk of said identifications have come from spectral line identifications with radio telescopes at microwave, millimeter, and submillimeter wavelengths. The laboratory assignment of rotational transitions can, however, become complicated by certain structural components of the molecules under investigation. Transition splittings caused by internal rotation, nuclear spin, or unpaired electron spin can make identification of molecules possessing these features difficult, especially in telescope data with overlapping molecular signals. Therefore, the spectra of three molecules with these complex internal motions (two of which are potential precursors to amino acids or other biologically relevant molecules in the ISM) have been investigated in the millimeter/submillimeter regime: pyruvic acid (CH3COCOOH), the argon-methanol van der Waals cluster (Ar-CH3OH), and the aminomethyl radical (CH2NH2). Collection, assignment, and fits of their rotational spectra allow for future astronomical searches and identification. The results of the laboratory investigations and some preliminary searches in interstellar spectra are presented herein.

Book Description
In this thesis accurate predictions for the spectroscopic parameters of l-C3H+ and C4 are made from state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations. Both molecules are of interest to interstellar cloud chemistry and only scarce experimental information about their rovibrational properties is available. Christopher J. Stein recapitulates the basics of the computational methods applied and gives an in-depth description of the computer program developed for the rovibrational calculations.

Book Description
Much of what we know about atoms, molecules, and the nature of matter has been obtained using spectroscopy over the last one hundred years or so. In this book we have collected together twenty chapters by eminent scientists from around the world to describe their work at the cutting edge of molecular spectroscopy. These chapters describe new methodology and applications, instrumental developments, and theory which is taking spectroscopy into new frontiers. The range of topics is broad. Lasers are utilized in much of the research, but their applications range from sub-femtosecond spectroscopy to the study of viruses and also to the investigation of art and archeological artifacts. Three chapters discuss work on biological systems and three others represent laser physics. The recent advances in cavity ringdown spectroscopy (CRDS), surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS), and microwave techniques are all covered. Chapters on electronic excited states, molecular dynamics, symmetry applications, and neutron scattering are also included and demonstrate the wide utility of spectroscopic techniques. - Provides comprehensive coverage of present spectroscopic investigations - Features 20 chapters written by leading researchers in the field - Covers the important role of molecular spectroscopy in research concerned with chemistry, physics, and biology

Book Description
'This book could appeal to astronomers interested in interstellar and circumstellar matter who would like to know more about the processes in them from a chemist's perspective in a modern textbook. Overall, I found this book very informative and clearly written …'The Observatory MagazineThe rapidly growing field of astrochemistry focuses on the chemistry occurring in stars, planets, and the interstellar medium, bringing together elements of chemistry, physics, astrophysics, and biology. Astrochemistry describes the chemical history of the Universe, our solar system, and our planet. It explores in some detail the 'alien' chemistry occurring in interstellar gas clouds, the regions where stars and planets are formed, and also looks at the theoretical and experimental methods that allow us to carry out Earth-based studies of astrochemistry. The evolution of the Universe and the complex chemistry occurring both in interstellar space and in the planetary systems that form in these regions is explained primarily in terms of basic principles of physical chemistry. While there is plenty to interest the general reader, this book is aimed at intermediate to advanced undergraduates of chemistry and astrochemistry, highlighting many different aspects of physical chemistry and demonstrating their relevance to the world we live in.This book was written in conjunction with Atmospheric Chemistry: From the Surface to the Stratosphere, Grant Ritchie (2017) World Scientific Publishing.
