Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Chemistry and Its Wonders: A Popular Account of Some of the More Remarkable Recent Advances in Chemical Science for General Readers The greatest care has been taken to keep the subject matter thoroughly up-to-date. Much of the material here appears in book form for the first time. In every case the most recent authorities, not only English but foreign as well, have been consulted. No one authority has been slavishly followed, but an endeavour has been made to put every fact in a fresh and original way. Consequently the reader will find many old problems presented afresh in a novel form and treated on lines different from those usually adopted in the ordinary chemical text-book. By such means I hope to bring the reader into immediate contact with the thoughts of the great leaders of science, whose ideas, usually buried away in the transactions of learned societies, are inac cessible to all but the specialist. Book Description
Excerpt from Wonders of Chemistry The recent World War brought us to a sharp realization of just What chemistry may mean for us in the future, either for weal or woe. On the one hand it produced insidious gases, powerful explosives and the deadliest agents of destruction that the world ever witnessed. On the other, it came to the aid of more than one nation by sup plying nitrates for the soil and artificial clothing and foodstuffs. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 2 It is natural to feel a desire to be acquainted with the origin and the progress of such a science; and to know something of the history and character of those numerous votaries to whom it is indebted for its pro gress and improvement. The object of this little Work is to gratify these laudable wishes, by taking a rapid View of the progress of Chemistry, from its first rude and disgraceful beginnings till it has reached its pre sent state of importance and dignity. I shall divide the subject into fifteen chapters. In'the first I shall treat of Alchymy, which may be considered as the in auspicious commencement of the science, and which, in fact, consists of little else than an account of dupes and impostors; every where so full of fiction and oh scurity, that it is a hopeless and almost impossible task to reach the truth. In the second Chapter I shall endeavour to point out the few small chemical rills, which were known to the ancients. These I shall fol low in their progress, in the succeeding chapters, till at last, augmented by an infinite number of streams owing at once from a thousand different quarters, they have swelled to the mighty river, which now ows ou majestically, wafting wealth and information to the civilized world. Book Description
Excerpt from Chemistry for Young People After this general acquaintance is secured, the commoner elements are taken up, and the reader is told those more important. Facts about each which should be known, even to one who desires no ex pert knowledge of their qualities. After obtain ing such general knowledge of these elements, their qualities and their uses, the reader is led to enter a little more deeply into the greater principles that enable us to understand their action one upon an other, and to become acquainted with the Periodi cal Tables wherein the relations of all elements to one another is shown to depend upon their atomic weight. These relations include the subjects of valence, of atomic heat, and, generally, of chemical action as classified by modern chemists. To the enormous subject of organic chemistry, or the chemistry of carbon compounds, but one chapter is given; but in this are set forth such general laws and rules as enable the reader to comprehend the complexity of the subject and the methods by which chemists are able to make new compounds and to predict their qualities. After this general review of the subject, there follows a discussion of the history of chemistry and of its relation to human progress, which con tains, though in brief form, the important facts enabling young readers to know the importance of the part played by modern scientific chemistry in practical life. Then follows a set of tables which give in a complete way the essential facts in relation to all elements, thus completing those tables which in the earlier part of the book are confined to the more familiar elements. Book Description
Excerpt from The Laboratory of Chemical Wonders: A Scientific Mélange Intended for the Instruction and Entertainment of Young People On many of the commons in England, and by the sides of numerous streams, willow-trees are allowed to grow here and there. One more venerable than the rest has begun to decay, and you may help yourself to pieces of its trunk without the aid of saw or axe. Country boys, call it touch-wood, for if a spark falls on it it will burn like tinder. When the day has been unusually bright and warm, this touch-wood, if taken into a dark place, will shine with a star-like light.
