Book Description
Chemisorption and Magnetization focuses on particle size determination and on the number of adsorbent atoms affected when any molecule is adsorbed on a surface. This book examines the adsorption of a molecule on the surface of a ferromagnetic solid that produces a change in the magnetization of the solid. Organized into 12 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the experimental methods used for studying chemisorption and magnetization, which are applicable in granulometry. This text then discusses the measurement of saturation magnetization in a ferromagnetic substance in the form of small particles. Other chapters consider the conditions in a typical nickel–silica hydrogenation catalyst. This text examines as well the magnetization at moderate fields and near room temperature. The final chapter deals with the properties and complexities of palladium, platinum, and nickel. Students and researchers interested in heterogeneous catalysis and related areas will find this book extremely useful.

Book Description
Adsorption and Collective Paramagnetism describes a novel method for studying chemisorption. The method is based on the change in the number of unpaired electrons in the adsorbent as chemisorption occurs. The method is applicable to almost all adsorbates, but it is restricted to ferromagnetic adsorbents such as nickel, which may be obtained in the form of very small particles, that is to say, to ferromagnetic adsorbents with a high specific surface. While almost all the data used illustratively have been published elsewhere this is the first complete review of the subject. The book is addressed primarily to readers interested in heterogeneous catalysis and related areas of surface chemistry, surface physics, and physical metallurgy. For that reason there are included a number of definitions, and an elementary introduction to magnetism. But it is hoped that specialists in magnetism and solid state physics may also find here something of value. For that reason there is included an introduction to adsorption phenomena. If one group finds the detailed magnetic descriptions and calculations to be tedious it is to be hoped that the adsorption work will be found comprehensible, and vice versa.

Book Description
Spin polarized photoemission studies of different adsorbates on an Fe (001) substrate show the interaction between the adsorbate and the substrate d bands. Studies of the adsorption of oxygen reveal exchange split adsorbate bands indicative of both a magnetic moment on the adsorbate atom and also a strong adsorbate p{sub z} substrate d{sub z}2 bond. The oxygen p{sub z} bands show a large variation in exchange splitting across the surface zone, an observation that is not predicted in first principles calculations of this system. Spin Polarized Auger Electron Spectroscopy studies of sulfur adsorbed on the same surface provide some indication of the magnetic moment on the adsorbate. It is found to be of the order of 0.1 [mu]B. Studies of carbon monoxide adsorption in two different configurations, vertical and tilted, reveal little or no exchange splitting in the molecular 5[sigma] orbital suggesting that the interaction of this orbital with the substrate d bands is much weaker. 38 refs., 11 figs.

Book Description
The effect of adsorbed H on the magnetic losses in finely divided Ni at 3.7 and 13 mc/sec. was studied. The increased sensitivity at these frequencies is attributed to a difference in relaxation times for particles of different sizes. Experiments designed to detect the effect of adsorbed H on the microwave absorption of Fe and Ni single crystals are described. Possible reasons for the lack of a clear-cut effect are discussed. Ferromagnetic resonance spectra of finely divided Ni are described. The effects of adsorbed H on the intensity, g-value and line width of the resonance are discussed. It is demonstrated that the well-known magnetic effects of chemisorbed H on Ni, which have been measured at static and low frequency fields, can be observed also by magnetic resonance and with a sensitivity at least 10 to the 5th power greater, in terms of weight of metal required.
